In whose opinion are you fat?

And more importantly, who said it matters?!

As long as we're healthy, I see no reason to crusade against fat or for some 'ideal' body shape.

25. Oh, get real!
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 07:12 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
I'm 5' 6" and weigh around 200 lbs. The thinnest I've ever been as an adult is 140. The smallest clothes size I've ever been in as an adult is 12. Sorry, but my hip bones are such that I can't get into anything smaller. I've been considered overweight most of my life, and have been on diets since I was 8. I was told over and over that 'boys don't like fat girls' and 'boys don't like smart girls'. They were right. I didn't marry a boy-I married a MAN who appreciates me and all women for being what they are.

It doesn't matter what is on the outside-it is what is inside that matters. Are you caring, compassionate? Do you walk your talk? Do you have ideals? Do you try to continually learn? These are the important things, no matter what your size (or gender, for that matter).

I'm about 8 pounds less now and in an 8.
Look at me- what a tank! :D

I worked hard to be where I am and I will be damned if I let the media tell me there's something wrong with me anymore. I bought that line in my teens. I don't anymore. It's absolute bullshit the lines they feed us in our culture and what men (or women) really find attractive in women.* :grr:

* Not that very slender women or even bigger women can't be attractive as well. (my disclaimer as not to offend anyone and because it's true)

71. thanks - (as a "real" people who happens to be thin...)
actually none of the pictures of women who posted here look "fat" to me at all.

one forgotten aspect of being thin is lack of vavoom curves. and you know - guys like busty women. (when i was single i reached a point where i thought i would deck the next guy who assured me that "More than a mouthful is a waste"...!)

i have been thin my whole life but somehow it's not the panacea some people think it is. my mom's thin, my dad was slender built, i come by it by the luck of genes.

but for a good 20 years (starting in college when anorexia first hit the news) i got to hear people telling me i must be anorexic, or bullemic. and good grief - when i was preggers did i ever catch a load of crap from the "food police". un-real.

now however no one says anything because i have reached the "invisible" age of 47...

for those who hate thin-women - if it gives you any joy i already have osteo. one of the joys of being 5'4" 106 pounds and hitting menopause at 37.

78. Yeah.
I'm not the same body type on you, but it always bugs me about this site (and everywhere it seems) that people can't defend their point of view without putting someone else down in the process. Beauty can comes in so many forms. Just because the media throws at us size 0 women with over-sized breast implants as the ideal doesn't mean so many of us that don't look like are anything less than beautiful the way we are whether more curves or more slender.

Besides, as a medium sized sized (size 8 or 9) woman who also happens to naturally be a D/DD cup (depends on the bra) as well as looks young for my age, I'll tell you one thing. I rarely know when a man actually likes me for who I am or if it's just some shallow creep who notices me for my "nice tits". I mean, I'd want a man I'm with to find me physically attractive, but at the same time, that's not all there is to me and my other qualities are far more important to who I am. Shallow cretins of the world, leave me alone!!!

Be proud of who you are. Being hung up about one's weight causes low self esteem and/or eating disorders.
As for myself, I actually felt fatter when I was losing weight and buying new clothes than when I was at my heaviest. I can seee how it can turn into a downward spiral.

Women are meant to have curves and be soft and cuddly.
Afterall, a boney woman is not a comforable ride, anyway.
Kinda like a car with no shocks, no suspension, riding on the seat coils without upholstery.

Spoken from a hetero perspective, as a ridee and not the rider.... ;)

60. I know a woman, black belt in karate, svelte, buff--she was complaining
in front of me and our very heavy officemate about her fat butt.
She had no thought of how I (a "normal" sized out of shape woman) or our officemate felt, nor did she seem to care. I tried to be gentle and as lightly as possible said, "gee, XXX, you're a black belt! You're the most buff person I know. Its really hard for me to listen to this!!" But she just kept whining about her flabby butt, fishing for compliments from us (more compliments, I guess--I already had told her she's buff). Finally I quit the gentleness and said she needed to stop.

It just impressed me as very inconsiderate of people with real weight problems.

Sorry to be harsh or a downer but please, what is going on with complaining about your looks or weight when you are gorgeous by any standard?

I'm awful sorry you mom tells you you're fat--that is very hurtful. And from my own experience, if it's self esteem that's the problem, no amount of compliments will make you feel better.

I saw it and posted on it, about eating disorders. Anyway, I couldn't tell whether Mrs G was being facetious or not, but I did see some posting here that made me respond as I did. I don't think its healthy to encourage the cycle of thinking oneself fat or ugly, beating oneself up publicly and looking for compliments.

Sorry I am being harsh, but years ago, it was some insightful harshness that got me to think about stopping.

72. I wasn't necessarily referring to Mrs. G.
I'm not sure--hey maybe I'm reading the whole thing completely wrong. But I do know it's pretty common for women to do it, it's not healthy, I've been there myself, and all the people in the world trying to tell me my perception was wrong didn't help--actually made the pattern dig in deeper due to the reinforcement of getting strokes for my upset.

Being called on my behavior helped. And I had to work hard to make it stick.

And (sorry to go on) the social pressure on girls/women to look a certain way is pretty damaging. Threads like this and the "size 10" thread provide alot of anecdotal evidence, in my opinion.

75. I completely agree with you.
I touched on that in "the other thread" also. It has taken me years to get to a place where I don't define myself by what the fashion industry and the Hollywood gossip machine calls ideal. And I'm still not quite there. Some people think I'm too thin. At one point in my life I *was* too thin. I gained weight after 35, and then I lost it again, replacing unhealthy habits with an active lifestyle, building muscle instead of trying to disappear. I'm proud of what I have accomplished, but there was always that underlying temptation to go just a little too far. I have to be vigilant to rein in that tendency.

I think I'm just right now, but I do have to remind myself constantly that I am fine, that others are fine, and that the world would be a vapid place indeed if we all looked alike.

I think the plastic surgery shows - Extreme Makeover, The Swan, and the like - are also responsible for some of this. Women are told they are not okay the way they are, they must go under the knife to be acceptable, and they all come out looking the same, like cookie cutter houses in a suburban subdivision! It's frightening how many people buy into that idea. In many ways, we seem to be our own worst enemy.

I've always thought that the curvy icons of the past were interesting, feminine and beautiful - I wonder then, why I was so harsh about my standards for myself.

82. What is wrong with you people?!?!
being fat is nothing to be ashamed off but it sure as hell isn't something to be proud of!

Here is a good site explaining what you SHOULD weigh
http://www.vegetarian-diet.info/body-fat-percentage.htm

this has nothing to do with wanting to be judged well by other shallow individuals but has to do with you're health. While it isn't healthy to be underweight it is even less healthy being overweight. It makes you more prone to a coutless amount of diseases that are easily preventable if you just loose weight. Your body is how you're brain interacts with the world, so why wouldn't you make your body strong and fit?

You can keep being "proud" even though we all know you really aren't, but trust me, loosing weight, getting fit, and strong is one of the greatest accomplishments out there.

Keep your 'being fat means you're gonne DIE! SOON!' propoganda to yourself. DIETING is actually more risky than maintaining your weight at almost ANY size.

Bella, who is 'morbidly obese' according to the docs, but has perfect blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and all other readings, and is fat AND fit. And has maintained her weight for over 14 years.

PS. Oh, and did I mention... I AM a vegetarian!

85. ..................
Bella none of what you're doctors tell you is "propaganda". What they say is true, you don't pay a doctor to lie to you on a subject. They are far more knowledgable on the subject no matter what your personal expierences might point to. A starvation diet, or something like the Atkins diet can be quite harmful to you're body. However if you change what you eat to lean meats, complex carbs, vegetables, fruits etc and challenege your body physically you will loose weight at a steady and healthy pace. A vegetarian diet is healthy but it is hardly the healthiest.

Like I said before, you're body is how you're brain interacts with the world so why wouldn't you strive to make it the best it can be?

And Bella, you're fit eh? Go run 3 miles post your time, be honest. If you can't do at least 3 miles in 30 minute you're kidding yourself that you're fit. I find it hard to believe somone that is 100+ pounds considers themselves fit.

Even if I were lighter, I can't do anywhere NEAR 3 miles, due to back injuries. Again, you can't apply YOUR standards to everyone else.

94. You don't know what my doctors have told me...
I was talking about your comments in your post. My doctors have all remarked on what great health I'm in, and do not pressure me to lose weight.

As for your standard of running 3 miles in 30 minutes, I bet you 90% of 'thin' people could not do that either. Especially someone who has had asthma since being a teenager and permanent back injuries due to a car accident (both before my weight gain, btw). Now, ask me to swim 3 miles, no problem.

Oh, also, I don't care how 'lean' the meats are, I'm a vegetarian for personal reasons. And one can eat very healthy as a vegetarian. I'll put my diet/number of calories/fat grams/carbs against yours any day.

Bella, who is tired of these "I lost 100 pounds and you can too!" zealots.

I mean, if they decided losing weight was right for them, more power to them. But they have no right to force that crap on anyone else.

And I know some plus-size people who are healthier than many so-called "normal" people.

86. Women Mrs.Grumpy's size can easily be fit
Being a high school and college athlete, I saw a few non stick thin runners do well as well as those who didn't do so well but still ran heavy milegae and were well under 30 minutes for 3 miles. Many of the female team sports athletes were relatively large women who were in good shape. We don't know the other poster personally and didn't know athletes that were quite her size so I can't say. I am saying that I knew athletes in college who were medically overweight but were in good shape.
People who are overweight, who are in otherwise good health, often aren't risking their health. If that is their natural weight, they should not try to lose weight except a gradual transition into a healthy exercise program or healthy diet that they can maintain.
I don't know about being underweight being more healthy than overweight. When I was about 10 pounds overweight, my doctor never suggested that I should lose weight. I have lost more weight involuntarily after my doctor said that it would be bad for me to lose more weight. My gastro doctor said that I should eat as much as possible when I asked about diet. According to the BMI, I am approaching underweight but still am not. I guess that my doctors must disagree.
Mrs. Grumpy probably isn't overweight. If she is, she is still easily the size or smaller than many of the fit athletes who I knew.

92. Here's some "Food For Thought", Lost147
I had an aunt who spent most of her adult life between 300 and 400 pounds. She lived to 73.

My mother always watched her weight. She lived to 72.

Judging by your user name, you decided to lose weight and did it. Good for you. But don't condemn those who can't lose due to their physical makeup, or those (like me) who find them attractive.

BTW, did you know that a large percentage of overweight women were molested when they were younger? Before you blast someone else, walk a mile in their shoes.

99. Both my grandmothers
were around 225-250 lbs...and they lived to be 83 and 88 (the latter may have lived longer; she died of hypothermia). They cooked with butter and cream; one big difference was that all their food was fresh from the garden, field or from the butchers (they raised their own food). No pesticides, antibiotics or hormones in their food.

They had 11 and 7 kids respectively, and were too busy to worry about their weight.

Exercise? Well, they weren't on the treadmills, but they stayed active, as in walking wherever they needed to go, gardening, keeping house (and both of them did all those things until their passing).

It's all the crap that goes into food that concerns me most, and their lack of nutritional value.

You all look great. :)

88. Gotta weigh in here
Pun fully intended.

For all you people who equate clothing sizes with whether or not you're overweight, it's a false measurement. It all depends on the body type. Whoever was lamenting that they wear a size 10 and that makes them fat - bullshit.

I'm a woman who stands about 5'7" tall and when I am trim, buff and in great shape (which I'm not now but I was a few years ago when I worked construction - believe me, there was not an ounce of fat on me), I weigh around 130 pounds and wear a size 9.

If I ever got to where I wore something smaller (and I have gone down to a size 7), I would be scrawny (and was, to the point of having all my ribs and my collarbone sticking out like a starving child's). I am what they call "big boned" - I have a larger frame. I'm not petite or delicately built or whatever they call it.

And by the way, MrsGrumpy, you look great! :hi:

way too much about this kind of crap. Remember way back when Bush first took office? That's when all this "official concern" that Americans were overweight began
It came out of his administration. I refuse to join in. I think people are doing the best they can in their lives and don't need phony issues to deal with. Their are a lot more important things.
