ARRRGH! Freeper used the "man on dog" arguement with me today! Hold me. |
|
I had a patient today that I've known for a while. Nice guy. Getting diabetes. Likes to talk. Well, today we had "The Talk". He said he was a righty, I proudly identified myself as a leftie. He asked why, and I told him that being a Christian was a large part of why I'm a liberal. Instead of talking about Jesus, his love, forgiveness and tolerance, he wanted to talk about abortion and gay marriage. :grr: He said, in a manner that would make Rick Santorum proud: "Well if you're talking about man on man, pretty soon your gonna have to talk about man on dog." As you can imagine, no amount of logical reasoned debate would convince this guy that gay marriage is certainly not a threat to the institution of marriage; not mine, not anybody else's. He's still a nice, if deluded and probably self-hating, guy. We'll still talk; but MAN! I need some love after that.
On the plus side, my very next patient was a sweet liberal lady who volunteers to help homeless people and AIDS patients. Did my heart a world of good.

1. Jesus preached love and tolerance of our neighbors. |

Your patient was no Christian.

5. Yeah, I know. He called himself one, though. He probably had |
|
the same thought I did: "This guy calls himself one, but isn't." I guess the litmus test is, if Jesus is in front of you, what do you pick up? The cross? Or the hammer and nails?
Remember, he was a long-haired, peace-and-love, anti-capitalist Jewish socialist.
Thanks for being there, GOPisEvil, ole buddy. I need some sanity right now.

the patients. My boss is a right-winger, too. But oddly enough, he is very calm and soft-spoken, very nice, and a great boss to have. He doesn't froth at the mouth like the right-wing media blowhards.
Thanks for the hug, bettyellen; I needed that. Back atcha.

They don't seem to care about what Jesus would say about the war or how we should all love each other and not judge ("lest ye be judged"), they go right for the "gay marriage" and anti-choice. I always wait for that proof of all proof, intellectually thought-out, without a doubt evidence "It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" :eyes:

14. He also tried the famous freeper dodge: "There are PEOPLE in |
|
this country who want us to be under U.N. domination, and do whatever they tell us to do."
I had to remind him that the U.N. is a deliberative body, not a legislative body. They can't pass laws. The U.N. exists in the belief that it is possible to settle our international differences without violence. The longer we keep talking to one another, the less likely it is that innocent people will die for our pig-headedness.
Waste of breath. Poor guy just believes whatever Big Brother tells him to.

15. Well, here's what I'm saying from now on: |
|
First, I don't give a fuck about gay marriage. Nor do I give a fuck about heterosexual marriage, for that matter. Why? Because : while they've whipped everyone into a frenzy over his complete non-issue, meanwhile George W. Bush and his gang are running a full frontal assault on the New Deal. They're going to shred America's Social Security. They're going to demolish protections for American workers and American unions. They're going to literally pull the foundation out from under the American middle class. AND THEY KNOW IT. That's why they're trying like hell to keep us all fighting about gay marriage and Merry Christmas and anything else they can pull out of their ass to keep our eyes off the ball until it's too late. By the time Bush and his wrecking ball get through with the American middle class, nobody is going to be worrying about what to call Adam and Steve's relationship. They're going to be wondering why their kids don't have any jobs that aren't 70 hours a week with shit pay and no benefits. And they'll be wondering why they can't afford medical care anymore. Or college. Or the rest of the things that used to make the words "middle class" something to be desired.
These braindead morons wouldn't know their own interest if it bit them on the ass. They think the middle class has always been there, and will be there forever, just waiting to welcome them into its ranks. They think this because the New Deal was so good at creating and sustaining the conditions that allowed the middle class to flourish. But that's going away now. Now, it's back to the 1920's. The 1910's. Hell, the 1890's.
They say that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It's time someone shoved a history book into these idiots' faces. And I honestly do not care if that takes time away from the latest distraction campaign. No, scratch that: I hope it DOES take time away from them. I hope it reminds people that "the good life" that they think they enjoy didn't just happen all by itself. It took generations of sacrifice and struggle to create this "natural" middle class that they like to think of as the pride of America. And yes, this is still an unfinished work, and yes, there is still room for improvement. But there's no point discussing improvements to the building while Bush and his band of psychos are in the process of trying to burn it down. We need to keep our eyes on them, and deal with that issue FIRST AND FOREMOST, because if that attack is not beaten back decisively, all the rest of this is just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. As for me, I'm going to focus on keeping the ship from hitting that iceberg.
End of rant.

18. Honest question: why do you even engage them? |
|
I did that for years. No more. As soon as I know they are of that "persuasion" I change the subject to something TOTALLY innocuous or I don't continue discussing anything with them.
I know the shit they are going to spew by HEART. I don't need to hear it again, nor do I need to be an audience to them. They aren't going to be convinced by me and I sure as hell am not going to be convinced by them, so why bother? Especially with people like that who bring up bestiality as an analogy to homosexuality. I mean give me a fucking break, really.
