Cops Use Taser To Stop 300-Pound Man From Stealing Soda
SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police were called to a McDonald's in Hillcrest after reports that a 300-pound man had stolen some soda and threatened some of the workers.

Police arrived at the restaurant in the 1400 block of University Avenue a little before 7 p.m. Officers tried to talk the suspect into leaving the McDonalds, but he refused, so an attempt was made to handcuff the man, who is in his 50s.

According to authorities, the man pulled away from them and took a fighting stance, clenching his fists. One of the officers pointed his Taser gun at the suspect and asked him again to cooperate. The man, however, took a swing at the officer, who then fired the weapon and immobilized him.

Police took the man to County Jail, where he faces multiple charges.

1. Set phasers to stun.
Not really having a problem with this. If he is going to steal the soda, then just take it and leave. Once you start to threaten someone and then take an offensive posture, you are letting yourself open to a couple of baton whacks or taser. Especially if you weigh 300 lbs. Why do people do such stupid stuff with the police? Sounds like what you would see on Cops! Another dumbass looking to get his butt kicked.

2. At least it wasn't an eleven year-old girl...
The last half-dozen "taser stories" on this forum have involved children.

A 300lb man in his 50's who gets violent over Pepsi must be a prime candidate for heart failure...

If he's threatening people, assaulting cops enforcing public order in a reasonable manner, AND an adult--then I hope he can still taste copper a week from now because it might remind him not to be an asshole.

It's situations like Offisa Zappy McTriggerhappy flash-frying a little girl for walking away that we need to get our hair in the air over. Not this.

EDIT: Or the other recent thread about the guy who died after cops shocked him because he became "unruly." (Note the lack of threats or assault.)

"Crews spotted the man after police had received a call about a white van driving erratically, and suspected the man was the driver. Crews thought there had been an accident, so they went to render help, but the man apparently became unruly. Police were summoned to the scene. During the ensuing altercation, a female officer shot the man with an M-26 Taser gun, which carries a charge of 50,000 volts."
