HELP - Anyone ever used "Chaser," the hang over prevention pill? |
|
I have the firm holiday party tonight. Massive drinking will be done. I usually need two days to recover. My friend gave me a four pack of "Chaser Plus" and indicated it worked for her. I hear them advertise on the Stern show every day, but I have never tried the product. Any opinions?

I live in Westchester, north of NYC. I take MetroNorth, a commuter train. I walk home from the train station.
Party is at a mid-town hotel. I will be VERY drunk, unless this Chaser stuff can somehow prevent hangovers and intoxication (not likely).

I only have four pills. SO I guess I can only have 12 drinks. (Thats fine with me).

4. From what I've heard, it's basically just aspirin and caffeine. |
|
But hey, if it works, go for it.

8. Its not aspirin or tylenol |
|
The active ingredients do not include aspirin or acetaminophen. They are mostly herbs and such. It may just be a rip off, but the girl who gave it to me swears by it, so I thought I would try it out.

Report back if it works. I could always use a good hangover cure.

11. Here is what they (the makers of Chaser) say |
|
Congeners are the byproducts of the fermentation process that give alcoholic beverages their aroma, color and flavor. When congeners enter your bloodstream, your immune system eliminates them by releasing proteins called cytokines. This surge of cytokines causes inflammation leading to headache, nausea and body aches. This powerful reaction to alcoholic beverages can turn a night of celebration into a morning of misery. But Chaser caplets attract and absorb congeners before they have a chance to do their damage helping you wake up refreshed.
I don't know if that is just bullshit.

14. After the alcohol has been absorbed, Tylenol is fine to take |
|
It is the mixing that causes potential liver issues. If you take Tylenol the next day (hopefully one does not drink so much that the liver can;t process the alcohol before waking up the next day) you are just left with the dehydration headache. Tylenol is fine to take the next morning.
This product does not contain acetaminophen, so it can be taken with the alcohol and not cause any liver damage.

i believe that the product in question, however, is intended to be taken *with* the alcohol, and consequntly, would be dangerous if it had contained tylenol

I think the charcoal absorbs some of the more damaging parts of alcohol.

6. An option is to eat prickly pears...REALLY! |
|
Prickly pear doesn't stop the headache but seems to prevent some of the other aspects of hangover.
Please remember to get rid of the spines before placing in mouth, or you will not only miss the hangover, you'll miss the party.

However, I will share my method of avoiding hangovers.
One of the main causes is dehydration. If you drink tons of water the day of the party, and make sure and drink several glasses (of water!) during the party it really helps. :) I also take B12 and C vitamins before I plan to do any real drinking. I don't know if that helps or not but it can't hurt. :)

10. I know the water cure |
|
been using it for years. I try to drink a glass of water every two drinks, and I already drank three liters of Poland Spring today. From my previous holiday party experience, this just doesn't do it. Thats enough for my normal night out on the town. Tonight will be the most alcohol I ingest until next year's holiday party.
I did just take a b-12 and C on your advice.

19. Here's the trick to the water thing. |
|
You need to drink enough water that you’re peeing clear before you go to the party. I also suggest not having any caffeine (if you can stand it) as it's a diuretic and can dehydrate. If you've ever been in athletics, you probably already know this. :)
Brandy is worst for hangovers then in descending order are: red wine, rum, whisky, white wine, gin and vodka. Just keep that in mind, too.

I take 100 mg of b-12 every day, my pee is always yellow, even after 10 liters of water. The b-12 really darkens the urine.
I will try to increase the water intake another liter before I leave. thanks for the info.

Follow the instructions and it will work. Of course, you still have to hydrate and be careful about mixing different types of alcohol.
Chaser rocks, but you have to take serveral pills throughout the evening.

24. Alka-Selzter in a BIG glass of water before you go to bed |
|
Is a big help. It changes the osmostic potential of your blood so that you're not peeing all night and getting dehydrated. Works for me, especially if I also wash down 2 Advil with it at the same time. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chaser doesn't have a lot of sodium in it, which would have the same effect as Alka Seltzer.

Your cells will disgorge their potassium, and replacing it is the key to avoiding a bad hangover. The most bio-available form of potassium comes from potassium-rich foods, rather than from supplements. With that in mind, eat plenty of bananas and papaya, before you go to bed and, again, when you get up.
Of course, you should also re-hydrate like a mofo before bed, too.

31. the best cure for overdose of alcohol is |
|
200mgs of time release vit c with plenty water. you will sleep like a lamb and feel like superman or woman in the morning. also helpful is b12 500-1000mgs and vit e 500-1000mgs (e will make you horny in the morning). have a pitcher of water bedside and drink when thirsty. all atioxidants help such as primrose oil capsules etc. but if nothing else take the c. try this and see what happens. have fun ps potassium in regular high doses can exacerbate kidney stones.

Active ingredients are activated calcium carbonate and vegtable carbon.
Try it tonight and see for yourself.
