I am trying out "Chaser Plus" an herbal (and expensive) preventative pill I got at GNC. In the past I have tried the excessive water method to prevent the dreaded hangover.
What I want to know about are Hangover Cures. In college my first-year roommate thought that wintogreen lifesavers and iced tea were the cure. (Never bought that). I usually try the old hair of the dog and drink half a beer.
What works for you?

and it's more water the next day, and more advils, along with some food.
God I hate hangovers. I do pretty well these days when I remember to keep drinking water along with my alcohol. It really seems to help.

7. Does water help the next day. |
|
I'm asking about if you've already done the damage? Drinking water before you go to bed seems to help. What if you wake up and did not get any water?

The sooner you get the water back in your system, the better off you're going to be.

4. Don't give up drinking the water before and during |
|
alcohol consumption. Alcohol dehydrates. It sends a signal to the kidneys. Once that is done, you can't drink the water to make up for the "loss".
There is no real cure for hangovers. When the alcohol in your system has been fully "digested", the hangover will pass.

Up, no rocks. Very dry, very cold. I get someone to hold a gun on me to make me get the first one down. The second one goes down much more easily. The third one tastes downright good and I'm cured. Oh...I said 2, didn't I? Oh, well.

12. saltine crackers and V8. |
|
my college roomie's boyfriend swore by that one for hangovers the next day, and always brought it to us the day after parties. i think it did help a little...
i do the "prophylactic" asprin beforehand and drink oodles of H20, and that always helps.
let us know how the Chaser Plus works tomorrow. i'm going to a party too tonight, let's compare hangovers ;)

i can only do a pint or two of it at a time though. it's strangely filling for a beer. it's more like a meal.
i'm probably going to have wine spritzers ... and maybe a shot of tequila or two :P

18. take vitamin B6 before, during and after the binge |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 05:00 PM by SiouxJ
or at the very least, before passing out ;-) . It's cheap and available everywhere. I'm betting the active ingredient in Chaser is B6. It has long been known to prevent hangovers. I keep a little supply in a pill box attached to my key chain, so I always have it on me ;-) . Also, try to drink water in between the drinks and especially before going to bed (drink lots then). I never get hangovers when I follow this method. I don't have a cure for after-the-fact though.
on edit- I just remembered, I haven't had a hangover in so long (because of the above) that I forgot - I used to eat greasy scrambled eggs the next morning and that helped settle my stomach. Something about the fat and protein I think.

19. Water and Pot before you go to sleep. |
|
I used to drink a big glass of water and smoke pot right before I went to sleep. Best preventive hangover cure ever. Or you can try a Red Beer the morning after. One beer with tomato juice(V8 can be substituted). Sounds terrible but surprisingly tasty and effective.

Repeat, if it doesn't help.
In emergencies, where sleep is not an option: eight aspirin, water, coffee and hot'n salty breakfast.

25. Before going to sleep, I like to drink alot of water and take |

some aspirin. It usaully works. The water is good to rehydrate the body and the aspirin to prevent a headache.
If I still have a headache, feel tired in the morning, potato chips and a powerade, gatorade usaully does teh trick.
One of my friends says that (spelling?) Alkaseltzer cold works. Take two tablets and BAM! Hangover-over!

26. Prevention is the key |
|
Drink enough to get a buzz, and then alternate alcohol and water for the rest of the night. This does two things - it limits your alcoholic intake and also keeps you hydrated. Two things key to avoiding a hangover.
If you don't follow this advice and end up getting a hangover anyway, greasy food and lots of liquids always did the trick for me. In college I'd get two McDonald's hashbrowns and a large Hi-C orange.

then a huge glass of V-8 or tomato juice...which replenishes the salt you've flushed throught your system with the booze and water. If it's really bad I have to concur with the greasy meal strategy. This works pretty well for me. I rarely have to take any aspirin.
