Poll question: David Lynch...Feh or w00t!...?
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 01:22 AM by dolo amber
FWIW, I think he's just *ok*... all of his movies at some point cross that "weird just for the sake of being weird" place which makes it not at all cool...but that's just me. :hi:

1. But see, you like "Eraserhead," which is weird for weird's sake.
"Blue Velvet," "Wild at Heart," "The Straight Story" (come on, a G-rated Lynch film: fuckin' brilliant), "Mullholland Dr." -- these are some of the best films ever made.

Not to mention one of the best TV series ever made.

And you're not at all cool, so I don't see where you get off sayin'. :loveya:

2. "weird just for the sake of being weird"
What???

That you don't understand anything at all, doesn't mean that Lynch is weired for the sake of being weired. He isn't even weired at all.

Your agenda goes like this: I don't understand anything at all, so he is weired. And anyone, who is as ignorant as I am, is invited to join me.

It's a nice party you have...
Hello from Germany,

3. I agree with you, Dirk
I've been a Lynch fan since "Eraserhead," and thought "The Elephant Man" and "The Straight Story" were on a par with the truly great films. "The Elephant Man" is one of the most atmospheric films I've ever seen. "The Straight Story" is a little gem that deserved far more attention than it got. I believe that, like Buster Keaton, future audiences will come to appreciate David Lynch's special brand of filmmaking.

8. Portraying the "Unconscious"...
Till that very day, Lynch is the only one, who did simply made the "Unconscious" the subject of some of his films. He did film the "Unconscious" instead of using it as an interpretation or an object of his films. He is far more radical than Bunuel and Hitchcock in what he did. And "Blue Velvet" as much as even more radical "Lost Highway" is an example of an artist, who goes as mainstream as mainstream gets, without betraying his work.

And if he could just stop playing with frogs, he would still be married with Isabella Rossellini:-)

12. Uhhh, Dirk:
Not understanding a movie or two, or even three or four, of David Lynch's movies doesn't make someone ignorant. I think you owe Ms. Amber an apology.

His shit IS weird as fuck. I get a lot of it, but some of it's just wacky.

13. I refuse...
Not to understand something is one thing. And in no way it is a reason to offend someone. But to be proud, to not understand something, and to declare, something isn't "cool", 'cause you don't understand it, hoping a lot of other ignorant people will join you, is a completely different story. The Nazis in Germany have used this strategy against art every day.
It's called "ressentiment" in philosophy and the oldest trick of the right-wingers and republicans of that planet.

4. He's a cinematic genius.
I absolutely love his work.

But his adaptation of DUNE was a disaster. :puke:

6. Utter pudknocker
Anyone who a) Rapes "Dune," and b) visits the abomination known as "Twin Peaks" upon the viewerate should ever be allowed behind a camera again.

Perhaps the counter of a dry cleaners (not to insult the dry cleaning industry), but certainly not a camera.

7. A deep sound coming down from Bobby Peru!
:D I like weird for weird's sake as long as there is some sort of closure. Unfortunately for "Lost Highway" that wasn't the case. Haven't seen Mulholland Drive yet but I heard it's more of the same...

15. When he's bad? He's really really REALLY bad.
When he's good, well, he's not bad.

"Blue Velvet" is by far his best work.

His latest efforts have been pretty godawful.

19. You have to be kidding.
Mulholland Drive was spectacular. The Straight Story, while not typical Lynchian material was really good, and Lost Highway was also quit excellent (though slightly underrated I think).

17. where did "The Straight Story" come from?
I mean, it's a phenomenal movie. But, it's nothing like his other works.

Richard Farnsworth is an incredible actor (and stunt man). Check him out on imdb and see how many classics he's been in, starting from 1937.

apparently, that wasn't the first time he was nominated for an Oscar, either

Misery
The Natural
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Papillon
Spartacus
The Ten Commandments
High Plains Drifter
Support Your Local Gunfighter (a favorite comedy of mine)
The Caine Mutiny
and even...
Gone With the Wind

a Hollywood god
