that Juliette Lowe was from Savannah, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", and it sure is pretty. I was only passing through though. :(

laid out in squares. (I live in Charleston but we go to Savannah quite often)
It's old South in its look but not in its feel due to the Savannah College of Art and Design that brings in a lot of very talented young people from all over the world. Every spring there's a sidewalk chalk art festival, tour of the college and activities that are great fun.
St. Patrick's day in Savannah is almost like being in Ireland with Mardi Gras thrown in just for the hell of it. It's an amazing day there when the population swells to 3 or 4 times its normal size.
Can't remember the name of the place, but it's down near the hotel...best bookstore in the world. Been there at least 60 years and if you can't find it there, you probably won't find it.
Riverwalk is very commercial, touristy but still fun. And you HAVE to go to the Pirate's House for happy hour. They don't serve drinks, they serve desserts. A 5 page menu of sweet stuff that'll leave you happy but bouncing off the walls.
Lots of good restaurants, many neat places to explore on foot. Not really a good city to drive in.
Oh yes, and it's the home of the Juliet Lowe house, home of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
Hope that helps...from a visitor's point of view.

6. It is beautiful, and very old. |

Natives enjoy describing Savannah like this:
"In Atlanta they ask, 'What do you do for a living?' In Macon they ask, 'Where do you go to church?' In Savannah they ask, 'What do you drink?'"
Truth be told, Savannah is pretty conservative--more so than any other Georgia city. If the author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is to be believed, and that book is a historical fiction, Savannah is also deeply homophobic. It's a great place to visit, ultimately, but I wouldn't want to live there.
