Okay DU Movie Buffs, need your brainpower . . .
I'm trying to remember the name of a movie, I think it came out in the early 80's. I don't remember who was in it, I just remember that the opening scene involved a gang getting ready to rumble, and one of them broke the antenna off a car. They went onto a basketball court, started a fight, and the guy with the antenna stabbed somebody with it (I think).

If I remember correctly they arrested the wrong guy for the murder, and the movie was about defending the wrongly arrested guy. Once again, I'm not too clear on the rest of the movie.

I just remember the fight scene on the basketball court fairly clearly.

Any ideas what the movie was?

1. If you can recall the name of even one actor, that'll be a help...
maybe?

2. Sorry, can't remember anything else.

I just think of the movie every once in a while, and have never been able to remember what it was.

I originally saw it on HBO when HBO was still in its infancy.

I just figure that any movie that stuck with me that long deserves a re-watching, I just can't for the life of me remember what it was called :)

3. I think we are going to need more than brainpower
With that sketchy description we are going to need a Christmas miracle to come up with the title. Keep thinking about it I am a movie buff and if you can come up with a little more detail I am looking forward to the challenge. If you can remember any other details it would be helpful. Anything at all even the genre like if it was a mob movie or a gang movie something like that.

4. The fight at the beginning, if I remember correctly, was a New York

City basketball court, a Puerto Rican gang was pissed at some other group (a bunch of white guys maybe) that had started using "their" basketball court. It was like a typical "turf" war type thing.

It was a teenage gang type thing, back when they still portrayed teenage gangs as leather-jacketed hoods with hair grease.

8. Because for the past 20 years or so, once or twice a year, for no apparent
reason, my mind just flashes on that scene on the basketball court, and their walk up to the court (while talking shit about whoever it was they were getting ready to fight).

Since I only think of it once in a while, I've never tried that hard to find it. BUT, now that I have DU around, and people tend to find answers to vague and obscure questions on DU, I thought maybe somebody would have an idea :)

I'm just tryin' to get thus multi-year brain-bug exterminated :)

on DVD so I can check for sure.

12. Nope, those were both S. E. Hinton novel adaptations, and
were much more rural.

23. Prison/courtroom as I recall.
The gang fight was just the opening and laid the foundation for the rest of the story.

24. I remember it. It was a racial comment that started the fight.
Two white girls dropped the the S bomb when some Hispanics were making cat calls at them.

Sorry I don't remember the title though.

25. Sounds about right . . . the guys were looking for a fight anyway
but the catcalls just set it off and gave 'em an excuse if I remember right.

Oh well, at least somebody else remembers the movie :)

27. Yep. That sounds right.
If I remember correctly, one of the characters was in prison for a long time (like 20 years, maybe?). Maybe even on Death Row, and the movie was about his appeals. Does that sound right?

28. Yes.
The guy that was stabbed was trying to climb over a chainlink fence to get away, and the guy that killed him yanked him back down off the fence if I recall correctly.
