Please talk me into buying an Ipod
I got $350 at work yesterday as a Christmas bonus...and it's burning a hole in my pocket. I have a yen for an Ipod...but I'm a 50 year old women and I'm not quite sure why I want one.

I do have quite an extensive CD collection and I've just bought a new computer with a 160 gig hard drive, so I have enough juice to download music etc.

Go ahead, talk me into it and I'll go down to Best Buy tomorrow morning and blow my Xmas money. I would never spend my own money for such a non-necessary purchase, but this is unexpected cash so I want to blow it on something for me.

1. Go for it
Buy an iTrip with the iPod. Rip your CDs to your hard disk. Make your playlists. Download your music to the iPod. Take it with you in your car, and listen to only what you like listening to over your car radio.

2. Unless there's something you NEED to spend it on, go for it.
Make sure you have rent, utilities, transportation and food covered.

Then heck ya, go for it! That's what a bonus is for.

3. I have a pink Ipod mini.
I bought it because it's cute, but I'm suprised at how much I enjoy it. :loveya: The unexpected result: I've bought a ton of CDs since I got it. :o

My only advice: at least consider buying a larger one. While I love the tiny size, mine only holds about 800 songs so I have to constantly decide which music to include & which to leave at home. :(

4. mini disc has better sound quality
They don't get promoted the way ipods do, but a mini disc player will give you better sound quality. You use a cable to load the music onto it just like an ipod. If you do get an ipod, before you leave the store, get a pair of Sennheiser MX500 ear bud headphones. Then go home, open the ipod box and throw the headphones that come with the unit away. Oh yeah, mini disc is also cheaper than ipod. Think about, look at any computer store at the prices for notebook computer hard drives. That's all an ipod is.

5. I've had every iPod since it's inception, and I tell ya what...
they are only getting better. I say, get one now! Treat yourself. It's really an amazing little device that changes your life once you are able to take almost, if not your entire music collection along with you wherever you go.

Not to mention, the build quality is amazing, and it's so pretty and simple to use.

8. I have a silver Mini iPod
Yesterday morning during homeroom, I dropped it, then stepped on it. I dare you to find another mp3 player that can take that kind of abuse.

9. I bought the Dell ripoff of iPod for my son for Christmas
I don't have any experience with iPod, but I did get the Dell 20GB model. It seems pretty cool.

One caveat: the storage space on the device seems to be "flat". That is, I cannot import directories (each containing one album, for example) into the device. I had to download software that would allow me to re-write mp3 tags in large batches, e.g., all 500 songs in this directory are jazz, all 12 songs on this album are by Herbie Hancock, etc...

Does anyone know if iPod has the same flat file structure?

12. If you use iTunes to manage your music, nope...
Lots of flexibility built into iTunes to manage your music.

Verrrrryyy easy to change labels/genres/album names of each individual song or group of songs.

11. Me too!
I've been this close to buying an iPod for a couple of months now. I really only listen to classical music and the thing that impressed me was the HUGE selection at iTunes. I couldn't believe it. They had EVERYTHING I could think of to look for. Plus you could buy it all as individual pieces if you wanted to rather than an entire album (with only one two pieces you might be interested in).

I figured iPod specifically because Apple really always has done these sorts of things better than anybody else. I mean yeah, everyone raves about iPod; most of the time I filter out all that kind of thing as just a bunch of the usual Mac-freak speak. But for something like an mp3 player I'm betting Apple really does do it better than anybody.

Yesterday I saw the Dell player on Oprah. I don't care about the price so much but it sure was the tiniest little thing. 10 hours battery life, 1200 songs, and just so TINY.
