We had our cat put to sleep today
She had suffered from tongue cancer for 4 months. She no longer had a tongue left. She ate via a tube in her throat. She was on constant pain meds. She had lost about 1/3 of her body weight. We gave her a thorazine (Rx by vet) an hour ahead of her appointment today to sedate her. Even with sedation that would knock me on my ass, she proceeded to nearly remove the vet's nose with her paws as he came towards her with a hypodermic filled with a calmingly pink clear liquid.

Never took no shit from nobody in life, and sure as fuck ain't gonna take it in death.

See ya round, Penelope. At least you got your tongue back. I made a special request that you have warm bowls of cream awaiting your arrival.

And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

6. I am so very sorry for you!
I went through that in April with one of my babies. He had FIP and I just didn't want to believe he wouldn't make it. I finally had to accept reality.

Know that now your Penelope is much happier and whole again. Maybe she and my Cripin can hook up, he was an arrogant fellow, too. :)

  Double hugs to you.

I know how it hurts. My last survived her operation, but passed on during recovery that night. I am currently between cats, which is one of the only two possibilities for a cat lover.

10. So sorry...
I had my best friend put to sleep 30 years ago and I still miss him. I buried him under his favorite tree in New Hampshire and visit him every couple of years. The pain goes away, the memories don't.

11. Please do a google on rainbow bridge
It's a beautiful site. I've lost two dogs to old age, one cat to old age, a 6 month old kitty to vehicular death, and a 2 year old cat to vehicular death. Yes. it hurts.

We now have a new puppy and kitty and have a cat fence installed.

Rainbow bridge talks about the happiness the animals enjoy as they wait for us to cross the bridge to join them.

Take peace in knowing that you gave them the best possible life.

Its a hard decision to make, but it has to be made.

Here is a link for Rainbow Bridge. Read some of the stories, just wander around in there for a while. It truly is a great site!!!

Grieve not,

But laugh

20. Poor old thing, and poor you too; my sincere condolences
It is bad when you have to let them go, isn't it? We lost two of ours a year ago July, within a month of each other..one of ours had something that may have been a tongue ca, but we did not know it ..she had a seizure, we took her to vet and she had to be put down right then.

Other cat just got too old..she was 17

24. Heddi, so sorry.
She looks like a cat who was at the shelter where I volunteer for well over a year, whose name was Edna. Poor old girl was missing part of her tongue and had been front-declawed, and somebody had just dumped the poor old gal on the street in that condition. Sweet as could be, but she was older and skinny and couldn't maintain her coat. She was there for such a long time, but eventually somebody took her home. She gave us all hope that eventually, every one of them would find a place to go.

Penelope had her place to go, and thanks for giving her that. They all deserve to have a lap to sit on, if they want it. I've got a couple of 'take no shit' cats here, and we love them as much as the suck-ups -- maybe even more, in some ways.

27. Thanks everyone, for your kind words
I don't think I've ever had to make such an emotionally difficult decision as the one we made yesterday. Yes, we knew it was time. yes, we knew she deserved to finally sleep, to be pain free...but holy moly...I think I'd rather have offed myself than to do that to my kitty (not really, but I think that people who have had to euthanize animals know what I'm talking about).

Dear lordy lordy. It was mighty quick, though. Quicker than I expected and so peaceful. Absolutely peaceful.

I could not imagine having to make that decision on behalf of another human being, that's for sure.

Thanks everyone again for your kind words. I really do appreciate them

You did the best you could under the circumstances, and I know Miss P was one lucky kitty to have you in her life. Let yourself go through the grief stages, much like one goes through for the loss of a loved human in their lives. It helps. The DU Group Ve*gan/Animal Rights is also available 24/7, just in case some schmucks come here to tell you "so what, it's only a cat". Thanks for sharing the photo too, what a sweetie P was! How lucky for you to have had her too! Amazing how these furbabies touch our lives!

30. Heddi, I know that pink liquid; my cat was given it too in Oct, 2003
when I took him in to get "put to sleep" as they say. He had pancreatic cancer and was only 8.

Yes, warm bowls of cream for your little baby who has now crossed the bridge.

As one who has walked in similar shoes, you have my deepest sympathy. I am certain my Tigger is seeing that Penelope receives a warm welcome and has everything she needs. Since Tigger never took shit from anyone either, they are either kicking some ass, or whooping it up in some other manner. Adorable girl.
