16. It should be noted that Butler quashed a fascist coup of the US
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 12:58 PM by nuxvomica
A group of financiers and corporate executives in the 1930s planned to take over the government and establish Butler (a World War I hero) as dictator. This was in response to FDR's New Deal. The idiot conspirators didn't know that Butler had been making speeches against corporate influence and war-mongering. He listened to their plan and then turned them into the FBI. None of these captains of industry was prosecuted.
Butler was a great American and his story should be taught in schools.

19. Thank You !
Not only should Butler's story be taught in schools, we should also teach the history of labor's (and farmer's) struggles in this country. Too many people in the US take for granted the easy life many of us live. They believe it's a given; it's not, we have it because we took it ! We took it from fascists and greedy murderous thugs. The same people that make up the ruling class in power today. Their stated goal- the complete reversal of all the hard won gains of the new deal. Sadly, they are well on their way, with the suport of the very people that will suffer the most !

PS: Love the sig line !

23. No. Thank you.
I didn't know that Butler's writings was available on the net. I know some folks who need to read them. ;-)
You are right about the teaching of populist history. Americans should know about their heroic forefathers because the suffering should know that others suffered and won, the pragmatic should know what has worked and what hasn't, the proto-fascists should know that they can't ultimately prevail and shouldn't waste their time, and everyone should know the debts they owe.
I am just starting to learn the real history of this country myself.

* has spawned a whole industry in anti-Bush books. Also should add 1984 by George Orwell because * is trying to make America match the conditions in that book.
