A few reasons why I'm glad that I don't live in Texas
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 01:11 PM by MrScorpio
1. Repression and exploitation of the stripper class:

>>San Antonio's City Council last week approved a measure requiring exotic dancers to apply for permits that they must wear while performing.

Law enforcers say the permit rule, which goes into effect next week, is intended to allow background checks on dancers and to quickly identify who is breaking local nudity laws. Full nudity is not allowed in San Antonio strip

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2953380

Looks like Texas public officials will do just about anything to go to the strip club and make it look that they're on official business.

2. Insanely applied parental consent laws:

>>Supporters of restrictions on teen access to contraceptives say the issue is not one of costs, but whether parents should know what is happening in their children's lives.

"Whatever the cost, if these laws force even a few teenagers to talk to their parents about these issues, then they're worth it," said James Sedlak, vice president of the American Life League, an anti-abortion group.

"If a young girl is afraid to talk to her parents about using contraceptives, then she knows she's doing something wrong."<<

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2953109

Well, Jimmy Boy, I hope that you'll wish a hearty congrats to all the thirty year old grandparents that you'll see this year.

3. Pitiful support for women's rights:

>>RESOURCES STATISTICS

• The state: Domestic violence shelters in Texas turned away 20 percent of those requesting services in fiscal 2004.
• The county: Harris County turned away about 62 percent.

Sarah carries scars on her arms and face from the times her former boyfriend pushed her from a moving car and cut her along her jaw with a screwdriver.

Last summer, Sarah, 26, fled to a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Sarah is not her real name. She had to leave the shelter at the end of its maximum 90-day stay. She was jobless and, after calls to other shelters, still without a bed.<<

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2953490

This is just too sickening to make light of.

4. The reelection of Tom Fucking Delay and the consequences thereof:

>>A group of House Republican lawmakers, stewing over a Democratic ethics complaint filed against Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), is pressing for the GOP to file a reciprocal complaint against Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for violating campaign-finance law.<<

http://www.thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/Frontpage/121504/ethics.html

Texas can just kiss my black ass.

(With all apologies to all Texas-based DUers who have to live there)

You need to think a little more before posting. There are many great things here in Texas including a long democratic heritage. We are just going through a nightmare that started when Ann Richards left the governor's house.

You want to talk about shitstains, look at your own underwear. ;)

and call them on it, i break obscure local laws here all the time, i walk around town without cash (theres an anti vagrancy law that says you must posess atleast $20 in cash or you will be arrested for vagrancy) i skateboard without a license, and i roll barrels down the sidewalk downtown (a $5 fine that increases with the contents of the barrel)

16. I don't think we have that level of hate here, yet.
I had family that lived there, the horror stories they told me gave me nightmares. Seriously. The Texans that let this crap pass are on a whole clueless and undereducated. We do have a minority of people that are just assholes, too. However, they are a minority. I can't change their minds no matter how much I talk to them. I admit, sometimes I just want to knock them on the head and see if it helps any.

It's true that our air quality is crap now. We have Bush to thank for that one. Ann Richards was a fine Gov. and to be honest we appeared to be moving forward under her. Then enter stage left KKKarl Rove and crew and we have been having MAJOR hell since then.

There are so many of us here who are fighting this. It's not like we have just rolled over to play dead. They had us down and have kicked the living shit out of us.

It still has not stopped the Democrats here from working their collective asses off without any support to speak of from their own party!

So often, people will bash a state or region but are ashamed to indicate their own home. Even the Great State of California has a Republican steroid freak as governor.

Make your complaints to my representative, Sheila Jackson Lee. I'm sure she'll agree demurely.

23. Austin and Houston
Austin is a bastion of liberal ideals and Harris county (Houston) has recently become more Dem than Pug. Without dirty tricks Delay would already be gone, and isn't likely to survive much longer.

I moved to Houston from a very Democratic area (Toledo, Ohio) and I have had more than my share of culture shock moments down here (Clear Lake, a burb of Houston), but the Dems are surprisingly strong in this area. Not to mention, Texas is traditionally Democratic, and it's only recently been Pugged.

Instead of having Texas kiss our collective asses, which is a very understandable sentiment, it should actually be looked at as a huge battleground state in upcoming elections.

33. Well you should count yourself lucky
it rather sucks here.

I love the land, I love the fact that my family's roots go back to before it was a state.

But just about everything else? Nope.

If tomorrow I got a chance to move to New York or Portland, OR or hell, just about any blue state, I'd jump at the chance and so would my family.

We are a truly back-asswards place. No offense to THESE Duers, but there's a reason we're often thankful for Mississippi, Alabama, etc.

They make us look good sometimes.

53. Here's something you won't see every day:
An Okie sticking up for Texas.

There are liberals in every state. There are wingnuts in every state. If your state went blue, then congratulations. We are happy for you.

Those of us who are blue, even in the reddest of states, still fight on, both against the irrational Shrub-worshippers around us and against the perceptions of our 'superiors' in the blue states.

If you ever get to Oklahoma, and manage to survive amongst the knuckle-dragging, cousin-marrying, possum-eating populace that surely must exist here (because I keep hearing about it so much), then give me a buzz. I'll cook you a meal and we can compare our liberal cred.

I am a Texan who lived in OK for a couple years. But I was lucky enough to have liberal in-laws there. Big donors in fact!LOL! It was funny, because my then-husband was actually a moderate Repuglican, but the rest of his family were all die-hard dems! I got to meet Al Gore when he swung through the state, campaigning for Clinton. Grandpop-in-law paid our way into a fundraiser. It was pretty cool:-)

60. Never was much for debauchery,
but I did engage in some simple sinning during OU-Texas weekends.

I did drive down Commerce and observe some pretty spectacular behavior, however.

61. Great link, Maestro!
It made me curious as to when the Dems lost control of other states. I think I'll do a little research on the subject.

64. One good thing: 71 degrees in Houston today
Freezing temps predicted overnight, Christmas Eve & Christmas. But then the weather gets back to normal. Does this make up for the summers? Not sure.

Yes, there's a lot wrong with Texas. Read the true story in the Texas Observer, now in its 50th year as the voice of Texas Liberals!

72. This is your reason for not living in Texas?
:wow:  While I am not a Native born Texan, (I am married to one), I have lived here for 12 years and for the most part I like it here. I find most people to be friendly and a dollar stretches pretty far here compared to other states which is a plus. My home state of Cali is very expensive, I couldn't afford to live the way I do in Texas, in Cali. And the thing is, we would probably have the same income in Cali as we do in Texas. So all in all, we are better off financially in Texas.
