Roy Rogers (anyone?)
Red Barn (okay a bit of a reach on that one but their chicken was OK).

75. Yes, Arthur Treacher's
There was one right down the street from my house in Virginia Gardens, Florida (greater Miami area). I loved their fish and fries and vinegar. I can't understand why they closed.

10. I Remember an Arthur Treacher's in Bloomfield, NJ
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 04:09 PM by CO Liberal
About 12 years ago. Don't now if it's still there.

The Roy Rogers chain was bought by Marriott. Don't know if it's still in existence. Their trademark was the Double-R-Bar Burger - a cheeseburger with ham slices on top. We used to refer to it as a "dead cow with a pig riding side-saddle".

:-)

57. I second Red Barn.
We used to go about once a week when I was little and I looked forward to it all week.

There are still Arthur Treacher's and Roy Rogers all along the NJ Turnpike (and I think there are Roy Rogers places on Rt 17 in NY too - I used to love their fried chicken!)

Fried chicken is my favorite food.

The chicken was "Pappy Parker fried chicken" which then became the excellent Roy Rogers chicken. At least this was the way it was in the DC area when I was growing up.

Pappy Parker was I think a Yosemite Sam type stereotypical redneck cartoon character.

Love those damn things. There's one off this one expressway on my way home from the dog food store. It's a real challenge to get past it without stocking up. I should remember how much they are, but I'm not sure. They have this 10 for $3.00 or something like that. I have determined it's possible to eat 5 on the trip home. They're like 3 bite burgers. So disgustingly delicious!

29. Tastee Treet chain; I think it was originally based in Iowa,
Nebraska and Maybe South Dakota, but there was this one mutant branch in Russellville KY. I think a WWII soldier from Iowa/Neb area who was based at Ft Campbell met a gal from R'ville and after they married set up the Tastee.

I was a true drive in, with the little trays that would hang on the side of the car, with a few tables inside.

There was one sandwich: the Tastee Burger..which I now know was an Iowa loose meat sandwich, seasoned I wish I knew how so I could make them!
You could get them with or without cheese.

Skinny little fries. Really good shakes

And the best ..really best...soft serve ice cream I have ever eaten anywhere. It was really rich and creamy..not white like DQ, more ivory/creamy/buttery color.

The place died off in the 70's, I think. Locals still call the location "The Tastee" even though it has been a real estate office, a used car lot and something else since the drive in closed.

Anybody from upper MidWest remember these?

Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 07:43 PM by mac56
back in the 60s when they wanted to open a franchise burger joint there.

People on and around campus lost their minds over this. People even pitched tents on the site and refused to leave. Eventually Red Barn came to stay, then abruptly closed up a few years later.

Now, of course, there are franchise fast-food joints everywhere you turn on campus.

97. Jack in the Box is one of the most heavily advertised fast food chains
on TV today. I think they went through an era of being near extinct after the 70's, I remember getting their tacos in Maryland as a kid from the yellow restaurant with the actual jack in the box that you talk to.

They seem to be quite successful in the West and here in TX.

Here are their locations. They definitely seem to be gone from the Northeast now. I think the e. coli poisoning scare did them in there, and almost did nationally:

Their current restaurants look like this:

they don't exist at all. I live in Fort Worth, and they're EVERYWHERE, but there is not a single one in Amarillo. My husband and I took two of our nieces from Amarillo to San Antonio once. We got Jack in the Box for dinner one night, and they said they had never had it before. I was stunned, but the next time we went to Amarillo, sure enough--no Jack in the Boxes.

I don't know what I would do without an Oreo Cookie Milkshake fix now and then...

I'm from Western PA and now I'm in Los Angeles, but I miss

Red Barn--was big in Ohio
Arthur Treachers--I remember David Frost doing the commercials for Treachers in the late 60s.
Long John Silvers--moved in during the mid 70s and effectively put Arthur Treacher's out of business
Eat N Park--the had the Big Boy franchise in western PA for years
Lum's--had the Ollieburger with 21 herbs and spices and served with a kosher pickle and mozzarella cheese
George Aiken's--in Pittsburgh had the greatest rotisserie chicken
White Tower--was THE burger joint in Pittsburgh before Mc Donalds came in
Rax--actually sliced real roast beef instead of the pre-fab Arby loaves
Howard Johnson's--EVERY stop on the PA turnpike had a Howard Johnson's with their fried clams and 23 flavors of ice cream. My sister loved Peppermint stick, I loved Chocolate marshmallow
Isaly's--another deli chain in Pittsburgh and it made wonderful chocolate marshmallow ice cream too
Mc Sorley's was a wonderful smorgasboard chain
the one I really miss is Roy Rogers with REAL roast beef and edible cole slaw

They also made the GREATEST strawberry pie!

Sadly, they went out of business in 1986 when the owner and his wife both passed, and STAX was turned into a Mexican resturaunt. Sadly they took the secret recipe for the STAXBURGER with them :-(

Seeing as they aren't about to win any NAACP awards anytime soon, either! I understand they've cleaned up their act, after being monitored and scolded and sued and whatnot, but if they DID in fact start out as, or absorb, Sambo's, it makes sense. As I recall, the food there was kind of Denny's-ish, so you might well be right on that score.

The Dog House was a little tiny building (that looked like a house) with only a drive through. They served any and every kind of hot dog you can imagine, and they were SO good. Now, there aren't ANY hot dog places that I know of.

Dairy Queens can still be found in small Texas towns, but they've disappeared from within Fort Worth city limits. Luckily, the one in Crowley is right down the street!

Burger Chef.
Whatta-Burger (Mel Tillis used to do the commercials. Cool!)

106. Mexican shop in Tempe (and elsewhere) AZ, Two Pesos
Killer tortillas, fresh handmade salsa and barbacoa to die for. Relatively healthy and very inexpensive. Open 24-7, so when I got off work waiting tables at the diner, I could have food not made primarily from deep-frying dough in boiling lard.

Nothing compares.

Went bankrupt I believe after fighting a copyright infringement case to the Supreme Court.

128. Burger Chef, Red Barn, HoJo's,
We also had two local chains in Grand Rapids-Ole Taco and Mr. Fables. The first was like Taco Bell, only more authentic.
The second was a hamburger place, where you could get really good fried mushrooms or onion rings on the side.

I know there are still a few HoJo's out there, and the hotels seem to be making a comeback. I remember when the restaurants at the rest areas on the Ohio and Pennsylvania Turnpikes were all Howard Johnson's. They had the best ice cream, and their own brand of candy bars were good, too. We always stayed at HoJo's-they were the same quality as Holiday Inn (at the time-Holiday Inn went totally upscale in the 80s)and were less expensive, plus the restaurant was reliable as a place kids liked to eat. I remember staying at the HoJo's in Scarborough, ONT when we went on our vacation to Toronto.

I also remember eating at Red Barn restaurants when I travelled. They only recently tore down a couple of old ones in Detroit-there was one on E. Jefferson and one in Highland Park that had become a Popeyes before it burned down a few years ago.

I know it's Del Taco now but I liked the food better when it was Naugles (we called it Naugies). Nothing like egg and bean burritos after a night of drinking.

155. Yes! We had one in our town,
in the same building that originally housed some now-defunct ice cream chain. I'm unsuccessfully trying to remember the name, but the buildings were octagonal.

That same location also had a Roy Rogers franchise once. Seems everything was three-months-and-out at that site.

151. From Eastern PA
Hot Shoppes
Geno's
Winston's (not fast food, but the first of the "Fridays" or "Applebys" type places)

I wish we had "In & Outs" in our area.

We can't really complain, however, since we still have Lee's Hoagie Huts (mmmm) for hoagies and steaks and Wawas for excellent hoagies. And more great pizza joints than any city deserves.

171. Wendy's when the burgers were fresh and never frozen.
When Wendy's first started they bought from local butchers and never used frozen burgers. Now they are as dry and tasteless as McDonald's. I also liked Arther Treacher fish and chips. Long John Silvers sucks.
