It's time for SNL to hang it up. That show SUCKS anymore |
|
...talk about a show living off its past laurels.
About 1 out of every 6 skits is funny, maybe not even that many. Last night's show was BRUTAL. I thought the only funny segment was the take-off on the remote control cleaning device. Outside of that, it was pathetic as usual. Where do they get their writers from anymore? I felt bad for Dinero. I'll bet he's sorry he ever agreed to do it.

1. Actually, I thought last night was better than usual. |

I loved their red state/blue state Santa skit, and I thought that Leviticus guy was hilarious.
And come on, who can say no to Kermit the Frog and Robert De Niro doing a Christmas duet?
Granted, it still doesn't live up to its glory days, and there were some really crappy skits on there (Pranksters? WTF was that?), but I cracked up a few times last night, which is more than I can say for most episodes.

4. I think it's almost totally sucked for about the past six or so years |
|
The last time that I remember the show being consistently funny was before the '96 presidential election. Others might not agree, but I thought their depictions of the Republican primaries and the major candidates were hysterical. They took something seemingly boring and made it genuinely funny.
Especially compared to now. Ironically, even though there is far more potent material available now from which to create satire, the show is worse than ever. I could come up with better skits every week just based on the shit that this administration does, and I'm as far from being a professional comedian as one can be.

7. I'd hate for them to hang it up - it's practically an institution now - |
|
but they definitely need a new writing staff. There don't seem to be any real standout actors on the show at this point either.

10. Tha t whole amateurishness thing |

has been around since rthe show came on the air, but now it just seems lika tired style of comedy or maybe just plain bad work. I haven't made a point of watching it in quite a while. I'll tune in to see if there is any good topical stuff on, but there is a great deal I just don't get because I'm not interested or involved in mass culture in quite the same way as I used to be. There is no actual hip when it means that to be current, you have to be Republican. A lot of these shows give me that feeling now, and SNL has been a kind of suck up show politically for a long time. The sharpest lines are aimed at the least powerful, and pull punches when the target is powerful and popular.
