13. There are a bunch of reasons for promiscuity |
|
One might be mental illness but I don't really think so.
I think a major reason is curiosity - hell, when I was a teenager and young adult, my friends and I all slept with our other friends - it was kind of a casual thing (late 70's). We didn't think about STD's then - it was pregnancy that was the worry. But it was curiosity, we were learning about sex.
Another reason is low self esteem. I've known a number of people who equate sex with love and who slept around in a bid to win affection. That's sad.
Then there's fear of committment or no desire to commit.
And of course, there are just people who enjoy sex and who enjoy the excitement of sex with new and different people.
If that's all mental illness, then we're all nuts, I guess.

14. No more than intense religious belief is a sign of mental illness. |
|
Seriously, there are people who are mentally ill who are promiscuous and there are those who are not mentally ill who are promiscous.
Same holds true with lots of thing including intense religious faith. There are people who believe that "God" tells them to do some really bizarre stuff.
I think a lot of things get mucked up in pop-psychology that tend to see corellation between things that don't necessarily exist.
I don't think one can take any behavior out of context of overall mental health, it brings us back to bottom line where saying "Is this a sign of that" can sometimes lead us to faulty conclusions.
Is wearing mismatched clothes a sign of mental illness? Possibly. But if you take it in context, it could just be a sign of bad fashion sense too.

That doesn't mean it right, but much of our behavior may have stems to earlier animal life. A brain should be able to over-ride animal tendencies like war right?

I'm in the middle of a book called "Barren in the Promised Land" about childlessness in America. I just finished a chapter about the history of involuntary sterilization in the United States. Most of those subjected to this forced surgery were poor women who had been institutionalized on the basis that they were "feeble-minded." The determinant of feeblemindedness: their social class and whether they were considered "promiscuous" (IOW, had been engaged in premarital sex in some form). In one case, a 15-year-old girl was deemed such after her stepfather got her pregnant.

not the institutionaLization because of it, but docs stiLL ask women about their sexuaL patterns as a tooL for diagnosis. i think it's a shame. more shamefuL when it's a femaLe doctor foLLowing the same methodoLogy.

Not a mental illness, girls who are promiscuous are just starving for attention and they're ugly. The truly beautiful girls I knew didn't let men touch them, not because they're conservative. They did that for control and to drive men crazy.

There's a hell of alot less throwing around of the word "slut" in places like Spain and Italy where they have a more evolved view of sex than this whacked out religious country.
