I believe you that toboggan is an alternate word for the stocking cap; I've just never heard anyone use it. Thus in my world, one wears a stocking cap while riding one's toboggan down the hill. :)

If you're going to call it a stocking cap, shouldn't it be a stocking instead of pantyhose? And if you do use pantyhose, what do you do with the extra leg? Let it dangle off the side of your head?

I guess these hats were popular with tobogganers (didn't fly off when zooming down a hill), so the name stuck. Perhaps its a regional thing? I've called them "toboggans" all my life.
