My dryer's busted
The heat's on, and the motor's running; but the drum won't spin.

Is it just a belt, or do I need a new effing machine?

1. A new belt
Dryers are simple machines, most dryers will outlast several Washers. Just replace the Belt and use it for another 5-10 years.

4. Did you do it yourself?
It'd be great to save the $ if it's an easy job!

6. No, I'm a first-class klutz
But at the time we lived in a condo with a great maintenance man who would do work for really cheap (I also gave him a six-pack of nice beer and a gift basket for the holidays - mine busted right at Christmas too, naturally). I think I paid $20 to him including the part. I have no idea how to replace it, but I'm sure someone here does.

Good luck! :hi:

5. hey happyslug--what if the dryer spins thru its cycle but there's no heat
you sound like you might know :) (I SO don't want to call Maytag if there's a simple answer.)

10. That is a REAL problem
I first see if the electric or Gas heating unit needs to be replaced. Sounds like the problem is in the heating unit. I am NOT a repair person (Through in my youth I did deal with a lot of Junk) but sounds like you need to replace whatever is the heating unit.

Now the heating unit may be expensive and a new dryer may be called for, but I would check with Maytag first.

Do you have the manual with the parts list? If you do, it should be a simple fix!!!

9. I do have the manual
It's a Kenmore, and there's a parts place not too far away. Is there a website with fix-it instructions?

It'd be great to get it done before next Monday, which is the next available repair appointment.

8. I fixed mine once when the belt broke
and I am not a repair person. I bought a book on home repair of appliances, followed the directions and fixed it!

That was a long time ago--now my fifteen year old dryer is acting up and it has something to do with the dial--it only seems to make a connection when I hold it in.

I have contemplated putting up a clothesline outside. I remember my mother taking in clothes off the line in the winter, and they were all frozen up, but seemed to be dry when brought inside . Smelled great too. It will be zero here tommorrow. I don't think so. I think I will try to find that book. :-) but then I have a husband now who is very good at Mr. Fixit things.

13. I wish you were on my local freecycle
We've been trying to give this stupid dryer away and it's taking up my spot in the garage! Why can't we get rid of it? It's got to be because it's around Christmas and people aren't getting the emails right now??

Bummer about your dryer. I hope you get it fixed up soon.

16. This might be a long shot, but
you might try calling your local Social Services department. It could be that there's someone on their list that could use that dryer...
