What's the one single state you would not reside in? |
|
For me, I wouldn't live in Alabama because of Roy Moore.
There are others...but, I would never live in Alabama or any other red state.
BTW, This is not intended to bash liberals who reside in these states.
What about you?

I've been from one end of it to another -- from Panther Burn to Hot Coffee, Biloxi to Oxford. Nicest people I have ever met. Went to undergrad there. In fact, that's where I really learned to be a liberal. I had to go to grad school in Chicago to learn how to be a Christian. Sort of odd.

Alabama can't say that. My friend Alicia is from Mobile and went to school here, she agrees that Alabama is worse.

4. Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida . . . |
|
in that order. Why? Because Texas has the worst state laws on its books than any other state in the entire nation, followed by "North Texas" eeerrrrrr Oklahoma, and we all got a small taste of Florida-style laws in 2000 which reflects their state laws, overall, too.
There you go. 1, 2, and 3. I've told my (now) adult children to stay the hell of out those states as well. So far, they have.

I'm sorry to offend Oklahomans. I know that there are a few nice ones around DU. It just seems like such a 'red' fundamentalist state, for the most part.

I love the state. It's beautiful, full of really great folks, and historically it's one of the most interesting places you'll ever visit. That's not the problem.
It's the fundies. They've run amok and may be headed for a hostile takeover. There's a large group of them that seems to believe W is the Second Coming.

82. SC is probably the greatest travel "secret" in the US |
|
One never runs out of things to do there. It's such a great state in so many ways and being your neighbor in NC, I have plenty of opportunities to visit. However, the last couple of times I've vacationed there, I've encountered huge billboards that ooze love for Bush. I saw one that made me particularly ill; it said "Support President Bush and Our Troops" as if that makes sending them off to an elective war without enough supplies just fine and dandy.
I get AM radio signals from the Spartanburg area and some of the fundy preachers sound like they're broadcasting from a John Birch meeting. It's very troubling. I'm impressed that you are willing to stay and fight.

88. Talk about billboards which make one want to puke.. |
|
I was on my way to my family's house on the coast and was passing through Andrews, SC. There was a billboard which stated: "Boots or Flip-Flops", as if bush were a genuine veteran. Back in 2000, there was a huge billboard on I-77 which stated: "SC is Bush Country". A strong wind blew it over and it stopped traffic on the interstate for several hours. I considered that a prophetic omen of things to come.
Thanks for the support. Asheville is a beautiful, and progressive, town. I admire the way "y'all are up yonder in the hills."

There's that often forgotten entire state attached to NYC. I grew up in the suburbs of Rochester and loved living in NY. The areas around the finger lakes (with all of the gorges), the Adirondack mountain area. The area around Lake Champlain is absolutely gorgeous. I think it's a great place to live. Other than the taxes, which are a bit outrageous, no matter where you are. But there's so much more to NY than NYC! The entire state has a wonderful historic past, I love it there! :hi:

a really big state. There are other cities too, mountains, wildlife, lakes, rivers, etc. You wouldn't want a car in Manhattan anyway. I live 60 miles north of the city and can take a train into Manhattan anytime I want to. On and they serve drinks on the train. I do drive there sometimes but one learns rather quickly one where to park, etc.

When we moved out West from NY everyone asked us where in the city we had lived. It got pretty frustrating because we lived up near Rochester. I lived there all my life until that point (born there and lived there until almost 18) and had never even been to NYC. My dad avoided it at all cost. But it wasn't until we moved from the East that I realized that everyone would associate "New York" only with NYC and not the state.

|
I lived in Connecticut. My father interviewed for a job in Atlanta one day back in 1965 or so. My mother got out the map to look up Atlanta and she gasped, "Oh my God, it's almost in Alabama!"
Now, whenever I come home from a long road trip and I cross the state line into Alabama I feel a sense of relief. Most places are what you make of them. I've made this place my home.
You can trash it all you like. Most likely you've never spent much time here, if any at all. I don't know where you live, but I'm sure it's a fine place with a lot of wonderful people. Most places are. Even big bad Alabama.

I've driven through it at night. Not a fucking thing for miles around!
Then you have the nutbars like Fred Phelps. Multiplied one thousand fold!
True story: I have a friend who moved to Wichita from Dallas. She said it was hell on earth. At least in Dallas we have Democratic groups, health food stores, independent movie theaters, etc.
Plus, she said she'd never seen so many pro-life signs in yards, on cars, everywhere you look. These people are hardcore.
She was ready to blow her brains out there. I'd be in the same sitch. For anyone who disses Texas-- at least we have pleasant things here like the beach, Ziegen Bock beer, bluebonnets, Barton Springs, mountains, the hill country, great live music, liberal enclaves like Austin, and a loud and healthy Democratic minority. In Kansas they don't have SHIT.
KANSAS. Definitely Kansas. GAAAAAAHHHHH! FSC

We're not originally from here and don't plan on being here more than another year and a half. I hate the Springtime (severe thunderstorms and tornadoes) as well as the fact that it is conservative, BIG TIME! We live near KC and there's a pretty big crime factor that I'm not particularly interested in, either.
The only state that would be below Kansas on my list is Texas. I have absolutely NO desire to even visit that state! I would probably have to put Oklahoma on this list, too.

It's not the politics, it's the climate and landscape. I've never been to any part of Florida other than the central area (ORlando, etc), but it's so flat, humid, and hot. I find it remarkably depressing to visit there for more than a few days. I also need some winter time!
On the other hand, the Rockies are spectacular and would be neat to live near, but the state I think I would like the most is northern Vermont. Mass. is pretty swell, but Vermont has that certain something. Plus the winters are more satisfyingly cold.

58. Born in Texas. Will NEVER go back |
|
It's not just recent, either. Texas law has been bonkers for years. My sister went through hell when her husband died intestate (yeah, his fault, I know).
Cost her 10s of thousands of dollars and over 10 years to clear things up -- and his estate was very, very, simple.
And even the reasonable people from Texas seem to be gun nuts. I realize this is not literally true, but I swear, just about everybody I meet/know from Texas carries (or would if allowed) a concealed weapon.

59. I live in NW Iowa; this is as far south as I'm gonna go. |

But the one single state I would not reside in: Texas. Too hot, too poluted. No way.

67. Couldn't live in Texas |
|
With apologies to the folks here who do or did.
I've run across (in business) and seen on the public stage too many of the smiling, polite, oh so friendly Texans (women and men) who'll cheerfully stab you in the back the first chance they get.
I know they're not unique...but it's the style with which they do it that irks me.
Besides...it's just TOO damned HOT down there...maybe that's a contributing factor to the behaviors above?

Bad vibes from the movie "Mississippi Burning" about voter registration, murder of civil rights workers, etc.

boring. But most of the bible belt scares me too (which seems to be growing). Or anyplace where the word 'Hun' is used instead of ma'am, miss, sir, etc.
