Do you like getting gift certificates as a Christmas present? |
|
Or do you think "how lazy is THIS?" if you receive one?
Actually, I like them. Particularly gift certificates from bookstores...Borders, Barnes and Noble....

3. I sure do. It beats the off green bathrobe that is too small and |

has to be exchanged - thus waiting in lines.

I know it's sometimes hard to shop for people, and someone who really wants to give me something but doesn't know what would always score a hit with a GC (and, like you, I prefer bookstore GCs).

Especially the bookstore gift certs but most any I like. Most people don't really know what my tastes are or what I already have. I'd just as soon pick it out myself.
I don't really like giving them, though. I always feel like I'm copping out and not getting something personal.
I can get conflicted about damn near anything! :silly:

9. I think they're a great gift, but |
|
I'm scatterbrained and I always end up losing the giftcards or slips. Then I feel terrible. I love bookstore certificates too.

if it's somewhere I really like to shop that's convenient, I don't mind, but if it's a store that isn't even in the town where I live I'd just as soon not. I got a Macy's gift card from my company, but I have to drive at least 15 miles to the nearest Macys through the worst traffic in the country, and I'm getting less tolerant of this as I grow older.

14. Way better than cash, that's for sure |
|
When I get cash, I always feel like I should save it or spend it on something important. Gift certificates, especially to somewehere frivolous, give me choice while allowing me to do something for myself.

20. One from a bookstore would be great.... |
|
A work vendor game me one for Starbucks's -- and I don't drink coffee. I prefer Irish tea with milk, and Starbuck's doesn't serve that. So, I plan to give it to the triplets' father, who is a Starbuck's devotee. But, it is not his Christmas gift.

As a teacher, I get lots of gifts that I really can't use. A gift certificate to Office Max or a teacher supply store would be the best gift of all.

If someone went out of his or her way to find out what stores I like, and got me a gift cert from one of them - - that's very thoughtful. Much better than a "Look! I got you a gift!" gift.

23. dislike, just make it cash |
|
A gift certificate is no different from giving cash except that it is less convenient for me to spend since I have to use it at a certain store and do endless calculations in my head to make it come out right with our 9.75 percent sales tax. It is also something else for me to lose in the ever-growing stack of loyalty, gift, and credit cards.
I don't have a problem with people being busy and not having time to shop but just make it the green rectangular gift that can be spent in any store. As I said on the other thread, once I had to drive an hour EACH WAY to spend a gift card.
As far as the bookstore GC, I have a very nice used book store in my town across the street from Barnes and Noble. Give me cash, and I can actually buy more books than if I'm restricted only to Barnes and Noble.
Just my experience.

Every year I always get a gift certificate for Barnes and Noble from my mother. I love it. I always go the next day and spend hours looking around

as do most retailers.
Once the recipient is in the door to redeem it, there is a 90% chance they will spend over the gift certificate amount.

I also enjoy gift cards from Calloway's a large local nursery/greenhouse; then I can buy stuff for my garden with it.

She's getting a good-sized one from AC Moore (her favorite craft store), some little crap because she wants things she can unwrap and she likes little crap like the cast plastic castles they sell at dollar stores, probably a couple of honey sticks for her bird (I think it's a buzzard) and a turned-by-me cherrywood bowl.
I told her I wanted exactly one thing--a 3/4" straight-cut router bit so I can start making bookshelves for sale. We'll see how that goes; she never comes down to my end of the building.
