What's a great first-person (Doom-like, FarCry-like) game I can get my 32 year-old brother for his 3-year old laptop computer?
It's probably running a Pentium I or II and doesn't have all the fancy-schmanzy memory video cards new games require.
Thx in advance.

1. Quake 2 is still a classic.... |
|
Can run well on a PII with 8 meg of video memory.

5. Amen, if you can find it, then note that in order to be really slick |
|
You should find the 3.20 patch *full version* online and download it, burn it to cd, and bring/send that along because there's not only bug fixes but the Q2 community is still big ( partly because Id went through a shitload of changes getting everything nice and balanced)
Also note, if using Gamespy ...
'Lithium' servers have further programming that typically have different room and a laser-type 'hook' that lets you fly around like Spiderman
CTF is Capture the Flag
Battle servers are setup for 1v1 play, don't let him touch those for about a month, trust me ;-)
and make sure his video card's drivers are running the latest version

|
Would it be in a store anywhere?

Not being glib, it's just that I doubt he'll get much enjoyment out of any of today's FPS with a PII laptop and a laptop-grade video card.
Maybe a good RTS like Age of Empires?

6. Nah, I did fine with a P90 and crappy S3 video card |
|
Q2 is old enough - barely

He referenced Far Cry, so I thought he wanted something recent. You're right, tho, QII would be fine. Or maybe Serious Sam.

8. errm, Serious Sam could hurt, although I remember it being |
|
fantastically scalable.
Another one from that era is Thief 1 or 2, both old tech and both a lot of fun, although it's by no means a shooter - it's a sneaker

I used to run it on my old 486, and it worked fine. Very addictive game. Plus you get to kill Nazis (looks towards current events :cough: cough:)
