I just recieved my grades, and I don't know what the FUCK happened.

I recieved TWO F's that I wasn't supposed to get (On one of the classes, I calculated that I would get a B and in the other class I calculated that I would have a C). I had done extensive calculations of my grades in all my classes, and after actually going over it with these two instructors, it was confirmed that I would get a B and a C in those classes as long as I finished all the work in the last few weeks of the semester. I'm calling my university tomorrow to straighten this out.

This isn't like that other thread on here with a sob-story by a teacher of having e-mails from his/her students about them idiotically wondering WHY they didn't get a B instead of a C. I was EXPECTING a B and a C in those two classes, because I had gone over my grade percentage in those classes daily, and had made up-to-date calculations, I had figured out how many points I needed total, and how many I needed to get a certain grade. HOW DO YOU FUCKING MORONS MIX UP TWO F's WITH A B AND A C, YOU FUCKING JACKASSES!!!!! TWO F's INSTEAD OF A B AND A C??? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING, NDSU???!!!

That's the biggest insult, in that it was mathematically IMPOSSIBLE for me to get an F in that class.

And I couldn't have mathematically done worse than a high D in my environmental design class, but since I was really piling in the (high quality) work on time at the end of the semester, I was, for all ostensive purposes, expecting a low C. The only things I didn't do in that class (out of a butt-load of assignments, tests and sketches) were one tiny in-class assignment, part of my sketchbook, and one medium-sized project at the beginning of the semester. Also, I got a really shitty grade on another medium-sized project in that class I did earlier that I poured my heart and soul into for some reason.

I'm appealing this motherfucker.

Half of my class cheated in Western Civilization and the Professor was in the room and I am sure that he knew that it was going on. We were supposed to have a pen or a pencil out on our desk and nothing else. The cheaters brought their book to class and pulled out notes. I asked the Professor if he had changed the test to an open book test and he said no.

He graded our finals on a curve which means the cheaters screwed it up for the rest of us because they will end up getting a perfect score. :Gr:

if it was mathematically impossible for you to get an F in the class, then it was certainly a clerical error. Instructors aren't perfect and mistakes happen.

Now, if you call to get it fixed and they give you shit about it, then have their "head on a platter." As long as they deal with the error in a professional manner, cut them some slack.

Nothing will raise the hackles of a seasoned professor worse than a student who has this attitude.
I am a professor. Two of my students contacted me yesterday with precisely the same attitude and I told them to come see me in January, to have nice holiday, and keep their cool.
I keep meticulous records. If a student's grade is supposed to be one other than what I put down, we will sort that out. There is no need to get all huffy about it.
You need to be non-threatening, non-profane, and go about this with an attitude of respect. If not for the person, then for the position. It doesn't matter if it is a graduate student or not, the mentoring professor will not want to help you if you have a bad case of the jerks.
If you can't do this, then you had better get used to it, for if you continue with this behavior through life you will get a lot of "Fs" you don't think you deserve and will have less recourse about dealing with it.

You have to control your anger, don't let it control you.

This is NOT a fight that will be easy to win if you go storming in demanding that your grades be corrected.

Go in with a cooperative attitude, perhaps something like "I think there might have been a data entry error. I'd been doing well in these two classes, and would have had to get everything wrong on the final to end up with an F. Can we go over the grades and make sure everything is correct?"

You have a much easier time getting the grades corrected, and if an error is made in the future, a cooperative attitude in this event will reap benefits if you need to do this again.

She had it down where she figured in "class participation" (it was a 5 unit Spanish class that met every day)
and since it was a 7AM class I'd missed alot of classes (but always got A's & B's on all the tests.)
Well I got a B on the final.
My final grade was F.
That teacher just HATED me for missing classes (it was a small class).
She wanted me to PAY.
I had taken 4 yrs of Spanish in high school and this was Spanish I class.
I was too stupid to appeal it to the board.
Furious couldn't even describe how I felt.
it ruined my grade average for a long time.

I have a student who emailed me complaining because she "expected" an A. She got an F. She didn't take the midterm, so she had asked me if I could allow her final exam grade to sub for her midterm, too. I said, "sure."

She made a 30 on her final, and, thus, a 30 on her midterm. Her other grades were decent, but they weren't weighted as heavily as the midterm and final exams.

You can't blame grad students--the prof gives final approval to the grades.

Before you go to the dean, the college president, or the departmental chair, you need to go to the profs of each class and ask if there was a mistake in entering your grade (happens all the time). If it wasn't a grade entry error, tell him or her why you expected a B or a C, and ask why you received an F.

Approaching this in a non-aggressive manner will get you much further than going in ranting and raving. You certainly don't want to rant to the appeals board, either.

They are human, too. There is usually a very short deadline between exams and grades due. They may have made a mistake. We had to fill out these scantron bubble sheets. It was easy to mark the wrong line or whatever. Give them the benefit of the doubt and politely contact them. Good luck and I hope your father is doing better soon.

I had that happen once. The professor weighted heavily on class participation and he just didn't connect me with my name for some reason. When he realized, he quickly raised my D to a C. I still wasn't happy, argued a bit more and he said well okay, gave me a B. We chatted some more and I told him I was glad I had calmed down and not seen him first, because I probably would have punched him. He laughed and said "that would have gotten you an A!". Very cool guy.

When I was in grad school, my BF got a D in a class. He went back and did all the calculations, and he had a C. He met with the professor, showed him a mistake, and the grade was changed by the prof. The prof cussed a little because he hated to admit to making mistakes, but it was all in kidding.

I also made an error in calculation on one of my lab student's grades. When she pointed it out, I was able to fix it quickly and send in the amended grade pretty quickly.

Good luck. Stuff happens. If you met with your teachers and were told you were on track for a B especially, it almost has to be a mistake of some kind.
