Is anyone else a big Harold and Maude fan? |
|
I probably shouldnt enjoy it considering my own unstable mental health but I can't help it.
I think the arts in general (literature, film, art, etc.) can say more about certain things than any dictionary definition. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a great example with regard to love.
I have always thought H and M says great things about love and the reasons for living.
And it never fails to crack me up!!

1. It was our favourite film in high school back in the early 70's... |
|
When I say "our favourite film", I'm talking about us GUYS, "young dudes", who were also into David Bowie and T. Rex at the time. It was our first "cult" film.
We all agreed we would easily fall in love with Ruth Gordon...

The "suicides" are too funny.
Bud Cort went on to play God in Dogma.

7. My God. I can never forget that moment when he sets himself on fire |

through the window, while his mother is trying to interview a potential mate.
It *never* fails to not make me howl out loud with laughter!

in which Harold is just kind of hanging there, and his mother walks in and reminds him to come to dinner on time. And when his mother tries to use that dating service on his behalf. And when Harold accepts a ride from Maude, not realizing what it is he's riding in.

one of my all-time faves!! The film makes a very strong statement about the real value of existance and simply being. It flaunts the tight-ass rules.
Two of my favourite scenes--the whole liberating the tree sequence, and Maude tossing the jewelry into the bay; "now I'll always know where it is."
Harold's XKE hearse is one of the coolest movies cars ever, and of course his uncle who salutes by pulling the medal is a classic charactor.

but it just didn't work for me. Saw it for the first time at the Parkway Theatre in Mpls in 1974, where it set attendance records, and I just never got it.
But like what you like. Maybe I expected too much.

Although I haven't watched it for many years, certain scenes still stand out in my mind. Harold's mother was quite amusing, too.
