I was recognized at the bank today. Making a deposit at the teller's counter, this woman shouted from across the lobby - "Bumpuses!"
I turned around half-puzzled and smiling. She waved to me and said "You were fantastic!! Even better than Darren McGavin!"
Replying, I said, "Why thank you! But I am not sure I would go that far." :-)
She just raved and fawned all over me.
A little taste of fame feels good. :D

Good piece.
Break a leg.... auditions are the worst part of the whole business. I know you know that, LOL....but ugh. I always had to hope directors/casting people had seen my previous work because I thought my auditions were so bad!

I am 3 for 3 on auditions, and the worst part is the blocking during early rehearsals.
The saddest part is getting toward the end of a run and just getting inside the character to new levels, and feeding off the audience energy - wishing you had just a few more chances than given to get it realllly good. I don't get stage fright - I THRIVE on the audience feedback. My colleague who played my wife in "A Christmas Story" noticed a remarkable difference between my energy level during the dress rehearsals and opening night. I came alive.

30. So few shows is definitely bad! |
|
At the end of a show, the letdown sucks for that reason--you (well, me) never feel like you got it *just* right. It's hard to do that, even with the notes from the director and the rehearsals--you really do need the audience to tweak a performance. They give crazy energy, anticipation, excitement, something. And you only get what, a couple weekends to do it?
I always wonder how film actors do it without the audience, unless they're playing to the crew.
Opening night was the greatest thing. It's so weird, I'm very shy in small groups but give me at least 50 people and I'm a different person.
Man, I miss acting!
