Thinking of watching "School of Rock"
I borrowed it from my parents. It's the one with Jack Black, who I never really found as funny as people who think he is funny. Should I watch it? Or is it not worth putting on?

4. SoR is definitely fun!
I saw it in the theatre and then bought the DVD.

I was not a huge Jack Black fan before that. :D

19. My friends and I get off on Jack's
facial expressions. I thought "Envy" was Hilarious(with Ben Stiller) and I'm one of the few people on the Plantet who thought "Shallow Hal"(I now own it) was Funny!

21. I love them two. And Owen Wilson.
Envy was worth watching just for Jack and Ben (I thought the horse thing went on tooooooo loooonnngggg). Did anyone but us two like Envy? Don't remember how it did.

31. Netflix only gives "Envy" two and a half
stars but I rate it a four star. I thought the writing and the delivery were excellent. Vapoorizer! Some of those comedies that are set up to be funny aren't but I thought this one hit the mark.:D

3. I think you'll like it
The kids and Joan Cusack help counterbalance Jack Black.

It's a fun film.

5. My kid and his friends loved it
When we saw it in the theater.

We bought it on pay-per-view and I warmed to it after a couple more viewings.

Not a huge Jack Black fan...but the kids are cool

7. Lovvveeed it.

The BEST is when he sings them the song he wants them to sing.

"Because you're not hardcore...unless you live hardcore....and the battle of the rent was way past duuuuuuuuee."

I think it's a pretty good film for people who don't like usual Jack Black.

He's very accessible in this. Does a lot of improvising, and his music background is a big plus. They went through pains to find kids who could play too. I enjoyed the music and the "putting on a show" component of the movie a lot.

Just be prepared for kids--the kids might irritate you more than Jack (if kids irritate you in films like me--usually I don't like films with kids but liked this one).

13. I loved that song.
One of my best friends is a high school teacher and former teenage metalhead, and totally related to the movie as he is constantly trying to get his hip-hop/rap listening kids to appreciate rock and roll. I related to it because I went to a stuffy school just like Horace Green and it's a damn shame we never had anyone like "Mr. S."

I liked the kids, I thought they were very "real" instead of the usual precocious Hollywood brats (even Summer grew on me at the end) that are in movies like this, and that helps a lot.

9. It's hilarious!
Trust me, the reason you haven't found Jack Black to be funny is the crap that he's been put in. I used to not think he was funny either until I saw School of Rock. That movie really lets his comedic talents shine through, and the kids are adorable. It's a "family movie" that is actually intelligent. And it's got Joan Cusack! She's awesome. :)

It's a good thing DVDs don't wear out because I've seen it about 50 times. The extra where he begs Led Zeppelin to use one of their songs in the movie is also worth watching, it's too funny.

18. Agree about Jack Black...he really has to be put in the right thing...
It's hard to know where he'll be effective. But in this film I think his Tenacious D background really gelled for him.

10. Also worth it if you like Rock
There are a lot of funny observations about Rock music in the film as well. Not a Jack Black fan at all, but he seemed good in this role - it works well for him.

12. Wish they could have spent more time on Led Zeppelin to Public Enemy
or whatever, that great big flow chart showing the interconnectedness of music, a very cool concept I thought.

And his handing out cds...liked that a whole lot.

29. Exactly. A big missed opportunity.
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 08:59 PM by Thurston Howell IV
We had a similar response to that scene.

When I saw the flow chart, they had some great bands on it like the Iggy Pop, Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Clash, for example -- maybe even the Velvet Underground. I wished they would had a montage of Jack playing some video clips of concert footage -- with sound of course. Obviously the director likes some good music -- I just wish he would have blown 30 seconds to a minute expose a lot of the kids out there to it.

I like Zeppelin and Public Enemy too -- it's just that some of the bands are less well known and it would have been a great opportunity to pass it on to the next generation.

But I suppose if they're really into music, they'll get there eventually. Especially with all the internets...

That looked like a scene that obviously a lot of thought had gone into, especially that chart. That could have been included in the extras, at least!

so the humor isn't too mature or adult....thought it was good, I wouldn't classify it in the same genre with Spinal Tap and Velvet Goldmine...

20. The Flying Burrito Bros
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 07:41 PM by ZoCrowes
Their first album which is no longer avaible in print as a standalone album. However, you can get it in the Flying Burrito Bros Anthology which is the first 2 albums (Gilded Palace and Burrito Deluxe) plus most of Sleepless Nights and other rare tracks for $20. Best description I have of them is Cosmic American Music. Cool ass fuzzed-out pedal steel on Aretha Franklin covers

40. It's a formulaic piece of shit made by people who wanted a big payday...
There were a lot talented people involved in its production, but apparently they didn't want to deviate from the formula a single bit (don't want to lose a penny at the box office you know) Why else would people like Linklater, White, and O' Rourke participate in such prefab crap? Jack Black is an incredibly over-rated, loud, mugging ham, so his participation is understandable.
