What does your atheist christmas involve?
The only time you hear jesus and god in my house on xmas is if someone steps on a hanging bulb.

We just hang..it's about music and socializing for my family.

1. Chinese food and sometimes, a movie
My family is Jewish, and that's pretty traditional.

8. Beat me to it.
The movie and Chinese thing is the eternal non-Christian Christmas. I'm doing that this year with a friend. She has no family here in town, so I'm giving her a taste of Jew-mas.

9. I even did that in Springfield a few times, after we got sick of constant
family interaction.

I'm heading to my parents' house this year for some Mu Shu.

12. Is this a Jewish thing?
When I was married to my Jewish ex-wife, we went out for Chines and a movie on Xmas eve every year with her family. I liked that tradition.

13. It's a Jewish thing sort of by default.
Movie theaters and Chinese restaurants are the only things open on Christmas in a lot of places. This year I'll be "celebrating" Christmas with "The Life Aquatic" and perhaps some Hunan.

18. It's SO Jewish, yes
But we started volunteering at a local hospital so that the observant can have the day off.

It's my idea of a holiday, honestly.

3. I have a pretty diverse family.
My household is athiest, my parents are kinda new age and my sister and brother-in-law are Jewish.

We usually get together on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and have dinner, hang out, exchange presents, etc.

No "Jesus" stuff, however.

4. We do all of the stuff, including religious Christmas carols.
It doesn't hurt.

I try not to shove my atheist views and values down my family's throat. Instead I smirk to myself about who really knows how to "turn the other cheek."

It's not going to do any good to debate religion, and some of the old people don't need to feel depressed about my failure to embrace religious bullshit. I recognize that Christmas is in fact a throw back to the old pagan Saturnian Festivals, these having derived from Solstice rites. I'm not out to prove something to pagans and I'm not out to prove something to Christians. I simply do unto others and I wish to have done on to me: I want to be left alone about religious matters.

7. Pagan here
my partner is Jewish, and my family is Xtian (Catholic). It's about getting together for a meal, having a laugh, enjoying our company.

Even though I grew up Xtian, religion was rarely ever mentioned at Xmas, other than midnight mass. It's always been a family get together.

one of which involves buffalo, one English goose.

I celebrate Sir Isaac Newton's birthday...and tend to give scientific or knowledge or educational stuff.

Greenery from our Celtic past. Goodies for all the racoons, squirrels, possums, rabbits etc in the neighbourhood.

14. Same as a regular old christmas...
... only without the jeebus bit. Pressies, tree, songs, meal (since we're in NZ it's a barbeque). Then off to the beach for a week on the 27th (yay!).

21. Somewhat traditional but basically pagan
Since I'm an anti-christ, we don't have any overtly Jesus-centric things going on, although the Christmas music I play will occassionally include several of the more familiar tunes (Silent Night and the like). I put 5 discs in the CD player and hit "shuffle." Unlike for Einstein, God plays dice in my house.

I have two kids, 11 and 8. Santa still brings gifts on Christmas, though he only fills the Christmas stockings. The big gifts come from mom and dad.

I've answered questions about God as honestly as I can (as in "I don't believe there is a God, it's something people like to believe because it makes them feel better. However, it's something you shouldn't concern yourself about too much now. When you older, you'll be in a better position to figure it out for yourself").

However, my wife and I are evasive about Santa Claus. I struggled with it when my son was 3 or 4 years old, but I decided it was better to play along with this one -- no need to create bitter realists at the age of 5.

As a result, my son doesn't believe in God, but does believe in Santa Claus.

My daughter asked my wife the other day if she believed in Santa Claus. She replied along the lines of "I believe in the Spirit of Santa Claus and giving." My daughter replied dismissively, "You don't believe in Santa!" It's tough to put the wool over her eyes. It seems that my daughter as a doubt or two, but for now is going with the option that seems to result in a lot of gifts.
