Poll question: Worst police force for a major US city.
The choices listed are from feedback I've received over the years.
Can you say LAPD?

46. I was going to suggest MIlwaukee for consideration...
it seems like every time they put one scandal (shooting some innocent soult, beating the fuck out of brown-skinned people or lining their own pockets) somebody pulls something worse than the one previous.

When I lived in Wisc., (1976-81) a retired Milwaukee cop, approaching death from cancer, confessed that he and his partner had placed a knife in a black kid's hand after shooting him to death. This had happened in the 1950s. The boy was on his way home from school with books under his arm. His mama swore her boy was a good child and an eager student, and never had carried a weapon in his life. She was right, but nobody ever paid a price.

35. A white 45 yr oldfriend of mine in Charlotte, NC was brutalized, held
overnight and they tried to get a false confession from him for being a drug user. He takes HUGE amounts of prescibed oxycontin with legit prescriptions from an orthopedist because he has a shattered shoulder, multiple operations and is in constant pain from his shoulder problem. Coming out of the pharmancy with his prescription, two undercover drug cops cuffed him in the back and he was begging them to cuff him in front as he cannot move his entire arm back like that. Between the beatings and cuffing and whatever else, he lost even more use of the arm. The cops after many hours realized they made a mistake.

36. I've had enough.
As a retired Peace officer from TX. I'm sick and fucking tired of all this bashing of law enforcement around here. I'm proud of my service and the service of others. This is the kind of shit thats splitting up this party. Y'all have no idea what law enforcement has to put up with, you'd rather just cuss them, and call them evil. I have several friends who died in the line of duty in my 21 yrs of service, and who fucking cares. 2 of them have memorials on the side of interstate 20 in TX. One was hit by a drunk driver while helping a young lady change a flat tire. The other was shot in the forehead by a punk kid during a routine traffic stop.
To my friends, I'm sorry but i just can't take it anymore, it's just not worth it. It's pretty sad when this shit is allowed to continue. To those who disagree, just continue what your doing and watch another election slide by.

We are not talking about the many good cops out there who do good and put their lives on the line every day.

We're talking about the corrupt and the outrageous. You gotta admit, cops like Antoinette Frank of New Orleans who pulled armed robberies/murders for a side income are going to attract some wry commentary from time to time.

my cousin is a detective, has had to arrest people who have killed people in merciless ways, perverts, rapists and other jerks.

I realize that there are bad police but there are a lot more sickos who perpetrate crime.

I have only had very positive interactions with police officers, even the ones I know that are die-hard freepers who I don't agree with politically.

42. Not a major city, but the Fargo PD is very facistic.
They seriously have a vendetta against teenagers and young adults. They recently outlawed car cruising on Broadway, downtown's busiest street. They'll harrass teenagers and young adults for standing around someplace (anyplace), they'll even stop normal people walking on the street and proceed to harrass them as well. I was once stopped (in my car) late at night on my college campus by one of those bastards who had followed me for a mile, claiming that I was breaking the speed limit (which I wasn't), and besides, I was the only car on the road.

At least the LAPD is abusive to people who have actually COMMITTED crimes. The FPD is abusive to normal, law-abiting citizens who have done no wrong.

New Orleans PD by a long shot, proud supplier of more cops to death row per capita than any other!

Who can forget the marvelous mass murderess Antoinette Frank, who after conviction for an armed robbery gone wrong where she and her paramour killed four or five people, they dug up her back yard and found more human bones?

And let us not forget the wonderful Len Davis who moonlighted from the PD as a drug dealer and thus had excellent resources for ordering a contract kill of a witness?

kinda hard to fit them in a poll slot.

It's like if someone made a poll "what's the most violent city to live in." The poll is not saying that everyone in the city is violent. It's saying it has a abundance of violent individuals among a larger group of non-violent ones.

54. Isn't that a biased question, then?
If you say, "What's the most violent city?" aren't beginning with the premise that the city is, in fact, violent? Beyond this, what counts as violence? Do we only count physical violence, like rape with a broom handle, or do we count other forms of aggressive oppression, such as the threat of expulsion by a school for non-conformity?

Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 09:09 PM by sonicx
without judging any of them (LA, Detroit, NY, Chicago, the usual) and just asking the person to pick one. It's up to the poster to determine what is 'violent' or not. Otherwise, why do a poll?

Again, it's not saying everyone in the city is violent.

60. There are departments with policies which are not
in line with "reasonable" police behaviour and waaaay out of touch with the citizens they are sworn to protect.

LA comes to mind.
NJ State Police with racial profilling
So does Atlanta, which I am suprised is not on the list. Miami and many S. Flordia departments would be there too. i.e. THe Stun Gunnings this year.

While some police departments are beyond understanding and allow people to excerise their rights peacefully, such as...

NYPD prior to 9/11 and the reign of error of Kerik
KCMO police, who have long been in the forefront of new polcing theories and patterns.
Newark, NJ police keeping a lid on a boiling pot
DC Metro Police... out manned and ignored by hostile Feds, kept out of the loop on major cases until crime scenes are wrecked and otherwise pushed, shoved and crapped on, and they STILL keep their collective cool.

So, yes, this is instructive if we contain it to department dynamics and policies.

Agreed?
