Your earliest memory?
Mine is from 3 years of age involving a stray cat my brother brought home and named Midnight. It ran away shortly thereafter. Anyone have memories from a younger age?

1. I remember being in my crib....
and being scared at the decal of the toy soldier at the foot.

I was less than two when I got a big bed.

25. I remember being in my crib too!!
My Mom had these horrible ceramic cats hanging on the bedroom wall with huge, green, marble eyes. I was horrified of them! I also remember being in a high chair, wearing a bib, bowl of oatmeal in front of me.

3. At just under two I remember falling down steps with my mother.
Years later I became aware that she was pregnant at the time, so her anxiety probably made it stick in my mind.

7. It's my third birthday, and I've heard someone say my cousin--
who is ten months older, really doesn't like loud noises, and that's why she didn't like the balloons at my party. So I bit a balloon to see what would happen when it popped. She burst into tears. Because I got a reaction, I recall feeling pleased. (Portrait of the Poster as a Young Psycho.)

8. I remember the warm, soft dirt
I learned many years later that I was about 10 months. What I remember is wanting to play with this very fine, warm, orange-brown dirt that felt sooooo good. I remember my Mom picking me up and moving me to other dirt and telling me to play there. I remember my frustration that I couldn't explain how I didn't want the dirt she put me in.

I learned years later that at 10 months my family went camping with a group in Yosemite.. I wrecked the entire trip because everytime anyone took their eyes off me I would crawl to the road to sit in the dirt and play. My parents kept trying to direct me to dirt that wasn't on the road. I remembered bits and pieces of this but mostly the feel of the warm dirt. My family did not camp again for about 6 years.

9. Preschool.
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 11:11 PM by Delarage
I have flashes of memories from preschool--a field trip to a beach and some boy knocking over my block tower, me slapping him, and me ending up in the "thinking chair."

I think I was 4 or 5.

13. I remember when I was two or three
I have several memories from that time period. One of the earliest is being in the bathtub, and tonnes of people coming in and dumping ice in it. I think I had a really high fever, but I don't remember feeling sick. I thought it was a strange thing to do.

14. No fooling...
I was around three and a half and my Mom was fixated on the Watergate hearings on PBS. She sat me in front of our Zenith color TV and we watched the hearings. I remember Sen. Sam Ervin (from NC my home state) and John Dean.

That and Billie Jean King beating the shorts off of Bobby Riggs in Houston Astro Dome. That was a beautiful night indeed.:spank: :headbang:

15. Three years old.
A UFO hovered over me in my backyard. It was fucking terrifying, and one of the weirdest things to have as your first memory.

17. Went walking into the ocean at Miami Beach...
We had just moved to Florida. I was three years old, and wore a yellow pinafore dress. It was the first time I'd ever seen the ocean (we lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before).

I remember walking into the water until I tumbled down headfirst from the pressure of the waves. I don't know who rescued me... maybe my daddy or another man.

I've been a lover of oceans ever since.

18. Climbing up onto the sideboard to see out the window
and walking among the china displayed there. My mother grabbing me off. She says I was two.

I was not quite three one day when my mother was listening to the radio. She heard an announcement on the radio, ran to the phone, and called my grandparents to tell them that Stalin had died.

Also at age three, I remember seeing television for the first time. We didn't have one, but my great-uncle did, and we went to his house to see the films of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.

After that, I have a lot of pre-school memories.

19. I was standing in my crib, I had thrown my bottle. Mom came in
the room and picked up the bottle. She was not happy with me. I remember the beads on my crib, and the fawns painted on the headboard.

i do remember learning to walk. that's vaguer, but i do remember not understanding that i would grow up and being fustrated that i couldn't reach a lot of things and walk without holding on to stuff. i thought my life was always going to be like that, and that it would suck because i was so small!!

23. JFK 1960
I have a memory of being in my stroller in front of the local Democratic HQ, I had on a JFK button. I was campaigning for Jack, I guess :)

I would have been about eighteen months old.

There was another kid there too, my same age.

We have been friends to this day. 45 years.

26. I was about three years old...
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 09:13 AM by Dzimbowicz
and my family lived in Colleton County, SC, right on the bank of the Edisto River.

I recall being in my little peddle car (no flooring, only peddles and such). I climbed out of the car and went over to my father and said, "Look daddy, big worm." That big worm turned out to be a baby water moccasin. I do not know exactly how close I was to it, but my father told me that it was right under the car where I was sitting.
