My GF just bought me one of those plastic braclets."Support our Troops"
So, she just bought me one of those plastic braclets that are "in" right now.

"Support our Troops *USO*" is engraved in it.

What should I do with it?

I support our troops 100000% but, I 1000000% do not support this war. By wearing it I think average people will think I supprt the war and I do not want that. Im thinking about writing on it with a sharpie markie so it reads:
"Support Our Troops - Bring them Home *USO*"

5. Girlfriend not know your feelings on that?
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 11:15 PM by tjdee
Eh, I know what you mean about the troops vs. the war...but I'm not in favor of the sharpie because that will call more attention to the bracelet than if you just wear it blank. If something doesn't say what I want it to, I don't wear it rather than deface it (I'm weird).

But I'm far more interested in why your girlfriend got you one in the first place.

9. She picked it up at 7/11 on the way over.
We've been together for about 5 years and she knows my interest in politics and the military. I just dont think she fully understands how these new yellow ribbon magnents and braclets like this are sort of saying "hey i support my god damn troops and this god damn war" ya know? Im 100% for the troops but not the war. She doenst see how I can bee for the troops but against what their doing. Shes weird.

6. Imagine all the money that's been spent on those magnetic ribbons...
and bracelets, and other signs and crap....

Must be millions upon millions of dollars.

Man, that would have bought a lot of Kevlar and armor plating.

7. Tie a black ribbon on it and wear it.
It'll kind of suck doing the dishes, but its the intent that counts.

13. I have this really bad knee jerk habit
of associating anything troop support related or flag/red,white, and blue related as being rightwing inspired, unfortunately. I need to work on that I guess. I am a Desert Storm vet too, which is ironic. :P

17. Probably because they're inspired by right wing
need to make maximum profit by sale and distribution of pretend patriotism. War profiteering on a smaller scale.

16. I don't see why not.
Don't blow your wad on a warehouse of those things. The fads been going for some time now. It can't stay 'cool' too much longer.

I predict you have until the end of the NBA season. Once the baseball players start wearing those things, they're done for.

Just my $0.02.

19. Donate to the Army Emergency Relief Society

Also:

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society: http://www.nmcrs.org
Air Force Aid Society: http://www.afas.org
Coast Guard Mutual Assistance: http://www.cgmahq.org

Then put the bracelet on. Even if others think it means you support the war, at least you'll know what it really means.

Another good idea: print out the info above and give it to anybody else you see wearing one of those bracelets. Tell them that you donate money to them to support the troops, and that if they want to support the troops in deed as well as in word, they should, as well.

These are good causes. They go towards helping military families who are hard hit by deployments and so forth.

Bush/Cheney stickers to make them feel guilty and piss them off.

Post the info on cars with Kerry/Edwards stickers to raise money.
