Greatest pop song ever?
I've had a recent revival of appreciation for the art of solid pop music. My choice for the greatest pop song ever is somewhat controversial:

"Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Great lyrics, catchy melody, rings true, has the funny 80s break, but also has that intangible something that makes a good pop song transcendental.

Flame away! (or just nicely add your own picks)

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" has the same riff as "More Than a Feeling"...

I think Cobain even references this on the new box set in the intro to "Smells....."

Michael Jackson, was, after all, the King of Pop. :)
Anything off this album is poppy greatness:

Thriller's got some good pop songs too.

And the Bee Gees in the 70s...just rocked.

26. pop can cover nearly any genre of popular music
hence, "pop"

There are pop country songs, pop r&b songs, pop death metal songs, etc...

But, the perfect pop song can transcend being pigeonholed into their genre. Even people that ONLY list to death metal will tolerate this song being on the radio.

I'm sorry folks, but even to this day, that song is still an ass-kicker. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, it's the only song to be #1 on the Billboard top 100 twice and not in the same year (i.e. #1 one week, #2 the next, then #1 again). Some of my other favorites....

39. Go back a few years, and you have your pick of the greatest songs ever.
"Stardust" was a pop song. So was "Night and Day." Nothing written since the days when swing music WAS popular music can compare with the pop songs of Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, etc. I mean, the Beatles? C'mon, it's embarrassing to put them in the same category of "pop song" as the aforementioned.

41. Embarassing for who? Cole Porter?
I agree with Gershwin, but what the Beatles did was as impressive as the best of the swing era, if not more so. It's just that so much of what they did has been incorporated body and soul into so much of modern music, that much of it is lost--and even then, it's still damn good music.

52. I'd have to make a long-term wager that 50 years from now, little of the
Beatles' music (possibly "Yesterday" and "Michelle" as exceptions) will be in play, whereas the songs of the pop masters of the '30s will still be heard, newly arranged and performed on stages, not just in elevators.

But it would be a long-term bet indeed.

Best 3 and half minute song ever! And, i'm as big a Beatles fan as there is. But, Stevie's song is A#1.

Also, i would like to put in a nomination in my top 5 for "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears for Fears. The song is cool, the words are great, it's melodic, it's produced great, has layers, good guitar work, everything.

That's my wife's favorite song ever.

48. Either this or "I Want to Hold Your Hand"
In My Life

By John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Sung by John and Paul - George Martin on piano
1966

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone, and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one, compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love, as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things, that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

(solo)

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things, that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

In my life, I love you more
