do you know anyone who has to top every story?
This guy at work (who I secretly hate) does that all the time. If you did something last weekend, he did it the weekend before. If you are sick, he is more sick. I mentioned I was one of nine kids. He says he is one of ten (possible, but I think BS). Someone else bought a car, thought she had a good deal. He of course got a better one recently. Another guy was talking about this new restaurant he found. Of course, the topper had eaten there previously. It just goes on and on. I know you are thinking, why doesn't he just avoid this person? We are chained to our desk with our headsets. These are conversations just between calls and he joins in, since he has no friends of his own to talk to. Does anyone else have a story topper in their life?

10. that was only a sample
this person also claims to own three houses in Maui left to him by his mother, but yet can't afford a car and takes the bus everywhere. NOthing against the bus now, but doesn't seem like a wealthy type. This person also too claims to have fought in the first Iraq war, and had personally tracked down Hussein, had him at gunpoint, but bush wouldn't give the order to kill so he backed away. He also claimed that if he had been one inch taller (making him 6'0 feet) he would have received a full basketball scholarship to the University of Texas. He also told us a few years ago when the stock market was booming, he owned some Motorola stock when it did a three for one split. He claimed it tripled his money overnight. I tried to explain to him his worth was still the same, but of course he knows better. Again, this is still just a small sample of his tales.

19. sociopath
back away slowly.

I've had two employees like this over the years. The first's stories were credible but extreme (like the basketball scholarship tale). He ended up embezzling $150,000 from the company and skipping to Europe.

The second simply lied his way through 6 relationships at the company, leaving two pregnancies and a bigamy charge behind.

Don't trust him. Warn your boss about him, cautiously if possible.

22. I think everyone knows about him already
I don't think he will be knocking anyone up. I don't mean to judge, but not that attractive. He is claiming to be trying to get his mail order bride from the Phillipines through immigration right now. He has a picture of her and everything. Looks just like the girl in "Full Metal Jacket" saying "me so horny, me love you long time."

23. do people loan him money?
for a 'temporary cash flow' problem, or 'my niece was in a car accident and my sister needs two weeks' salary while she stays at the hospital'?

It could be harmless, but my antennae are quivering about this guy.

5. You think YOU have problems...
There's a guy at my office who has to top not only my stories, but everyone else's. This guy is much more of a story topper than your guy. In fact, I'd say my story topper guy is all-around worse than your story topper guy.

Yeah...mines a much better story.

9. If you go the other direction, it drives them crazy
There was a girl in college who lied like crazy: She had "taken a whole semester in high school and lived at a ski resort, all while still keeping up with her classwork", for example.

The only way to follow that one was to tell a story about my first time skiing, and how I slid down the most of the mountain on my butt. Everyone got a laugh out of it, and she was downright flummoxed.

whenever somebody in the family gets diagnosed with something, SHE develops the symptons of whatever it is that member has and starts talking like she thinks she has it too. We are talking, tumors, cancers, you name it, you can count on her developing the symptoms shortly thereafter.

27. Almost all Floridians I know.
It usually starts off with a "that's a great place", "We went there", "We did that all the time" yada, yada.

And Tom, Dave, Mark, Suzanne, and others would respond..."Well, in FLOOOOORIDA, we would (fill in the blank)." :eyes:

What's so great about that insect infested steamroom without mountains? I grew up in California, so there!:P

No matter who is ailing with what, from a small cold to terminal cancer, she manages to make it about her and her surgery from 15 years ago.

He's obviously so insecure. He needs to feel special so desperately. It's hard for me to be mad at people like that. They just need to heal and grow up.

32. Yes I know a topper
Very frustrating having a conversation with a topper.

Mine is a topper couple. They are more interesting, more hip, smarter, and everything else than we are. Coincidentally, their kids are more interesting, more hip, and smarter than our daughter too.

They also have harder times and have overcome more obstacles than we have. And they get sicker than we do and more often.

33. Yeah, I know a couple of people like that
And everything begins with, "Oh, that's nothing! When I..." etc. It's so incredibly irritating.

One of my oldest friends does that but she makes the mistake of doing it with stories that I was there for. Someone else will say something and she'll respond with a topper, but she makes the mistake of saying to me, "Remember that?"

And I'll cheerfully say, "No, I don't remember it that way. I remember you fell off the barstool but I don't remember you beating up the entire police force.." or whatever she's talking about. I just shoot her down and it drives her nuts.

I've known a couple of those. What's weird is how long it takes everyone before they catch on to the fact that the person is just making crap up. It seems so bizarre.
