Anyone have that green bean casserole recipe?
You know, the one with mushroom soup? I think I had it once with chopped water chestnuts, and I liked it.

I sort of basically know what's in it, but I don't know the amounts. Can anyone help me out?

Mix green beans, milk, pepper, soup and 3/4 can of durkee onions.

5. Fire away!
two cans French style green beans
one can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of celery)
one can sliced water chestnuts
one large can of fried onion rings

Open cans and dump in baking dish, reserving about half the onion rings to be placed on top. I've found that it works best if you slice the water chestnuts up more, but its up to you.

Bake at 350 degrees for about twenty minutes. The recipe should be on the back of the onion can, btw.

8. NOOOOOOO! Try this instead
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 11:25 AM by Soft Georgia
pound of fresh green beans, cleaned
one yellow onion, sliced
as many garlic cloves as you like, crushed
one ham hock
salt & pepper

Put all in a big pot with about an inch of water, cover, simmer on low for a couple of hours. Stir gently every now & then. Replenish the water just a little bit at a time and only if necessary to keep beans from frying.

You will have delicious dead green beans. YUM.

12. y'know, I've lived in Georgia for 13 years now,
and I've given up trying to understand the way southerners treat green beans. "Hey, I know! Let's throw them in a pot with a bunch of pig fat and boil them until they no longer resemble what they once were!"

Blech.

I do like collards, though. And possum. (Looks around for CatWoman...)

15. I didn't want to like them, Uly. The first time I had them
I shut my eyes and swallowed.

The second time, I liked them. I began to realize that, while they are cooked to death, they're still delicious. It's the garlic that makes them. I doubt you'd find as much garlic as I use in many Southern pots. :D

It tastes like diesel fuel.

The kit that comes with all the ingredients (beans, soup, onions) is good. It was as good as my sister's.

16. Here's how I did it. NO CANNED BEANS! NO CANNED BEANS!
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 11:49 AM by mzmolly
LOL

I used one can of cream of chicken and one can of cream of mushroom soup and frozen extra long/thin green beans. I then put the soup into a small pan and added a bit of milk and a touch of season salt, liquid smoke and a few bacon bits, I then poured the mixture over the beans after placing them into a sprayed caserole dish. I then tossed the mixture and baked it at 350 until it was hot and bubbly, stirring occassionally.

I later added the french fried onions at the end and sprinkled some bacon bits on top as well. It was tasty. I like the idea of adding water chestnuts too.

The french fried onions have the recipe on the back, and here are a couple from the net:

I'm from Minnesota, ya can't get away from "hotdish" up here. ;)

Good luck, it's an easy recipe ... pretty much no fool.

20. Easy
Any can of French's Fried Onions has the recipe. Just buy some frozen green beans (14oz bag will do), a can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom (w/garlic!) Soup, and the onions themselves. Also requires milk.

I love it. I fix it for Thanksgiving every year.

27. I ~knew~ you'd show up in this thread.
I actually saw a "Hamburger Helper"-style kit for Green Bean Casserole at my local grocer. It contains tinned beans, but other than that, it's the complete ingredients sans milk, onions and/or waterchestnuts.
