The Lord Of The Rings ROTK Extended Edition Is FUCKING SWEET
The extra footage really fills in the loose gaps in this movie. I just got done with the first half of it and they included scenes from Isenguard where Sauromon actually gets to speak and has a whole 5-minute scene with him, King Theoden and even Grima Wormtongue.

There are extended scenes at Gondor, between Gandalf and Denethor. Faramir gets a bigger part in this. The battle scenes are longer.

Coolest of all, the scene with the dead soldiers is extended, so you can see what happens after Aragon goes "Fight for me...what say you?" and its a pretty cool scene with nice special effects that i was surprised was cut from the original film.

I can't wait to see what's on the second half of the extended edition. My girlfriend got it for me for Christmas and she got the big box set with the stone carving figurine of Minas Tirith, its soooo cool.

If you're a LOTR fan, I don't need to tell you to get this, but if you're just a casual fan, go get this too. This extended version is worth the extra money.

Ohhh, I'm in heaven.

1. Sounds AWESOME
...but we're going to wait for the three-box set extended version.

The additions sound PERFECT.

Why was Tom Bombadillo never included in the movie? And I would like more around the gifts that Galadriel gave, too.

8. Bombadil was a tangent from the plot.
He was a cool diversion from the main story, but he was a diversion from the main story, so they excised him. Aragorn, instead gave the hobbits their swords.

Old man Willow is in the Two Towers extended, but Treebeard says Bombadil's words.

16. Not exactly sure on Bombadil
But, I think that whole scene with Tom, Goldberry & the barrow downs was not really that critical to the story, at least that is how I remember it explained.

10. Mr. K and I did that for our anniversary a couple weeks ago.
Lots of beer, lots of crap food...we got up at "work time" and spent the whole day in front of the TV. It was AWESOME. The movies definitely hold up all together.

9. It's great - although
...no amount of extra material makes the "army of the dead" thing work, either dramatically or special-effects-wise. After all that fighting and sacrifice, Gondor is saved by an influx of lime jello.

Best addition: the Mouth of Sauron! Oh man.

I've listened to the cast commentary, and Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan (Pippin and Merry) are hilarious together. Dueling commentary by Smeagol and Gollum, also very good.

11. I was disappointed with it.
Not enough Faramir/Eowyn in it.

All we get is about 30 seconds. Phooey.

After all the time Jackson spent developing their characters, they deserved much MUCH better.

14. yea..
I'm kind of mad that Jackson left out the whole
'Where there's a whip, there's a way' song that the orcs sing in
mordor.

:)

Actually, I'm glad that Mordor march scene is in the EE. That was always my favorite part of the ROTK book.

The only thing I didn't about the rotk EE adaption is:
- More eowyn and faramir, I think there relationship was interesting in the book, more so then aragorn and arwen. Why are they together? Faramir was more akin to aragorn, why is eowyn attracted to him.
- Aragorn after emerging from the mountains, Actually had a 100 mile march through Lebennin to get to the shore and attack the pirate ships. I know they had to shorten it in the movie, but a quick cut of aragorn emerging from the mountains, the dead army following him, marching through Lebennin, people frighten of the dead army, and then the dead army attacking the ships. That would have been cool.
- I also didn't like aragorn attacking the mouth of sauron, I think he should have said something like 'i don't believe you, because if you had frodo, sauron would have the ring, not just his mailcoat', Judge by actions, not words. I think that would have been a better point as king to make.

btw, i still think it's a wonderful movie.

15. Yeah,
I don't like what they did with Denethor, he was dignified in the book.

And the stupid Arwen subplot... :grr:

17. Denethor was the best character
I loved him, the actor who played him was excellent.

Okay, I just watched the second half of the DVD. Here's the highlights:

The Corsair ships scene - excellent, and funny.

The Witch King showdown with Gandalf. I was wondering where Gandalf's staff went. Also excellent, if brief.

The extended battle scenes - always good.

The Extended Tower of Cirith Ungol scene, funny because all the orks are fighting with WWF moves.

The scene with Aragorn and the Palantir, very very cool, I was wondering why Gandalf said 'He'd be expecting a trap' and then nothing happens.

The Mordor scene with the orks was good, I was hoping for more of that. Favorite part of the book.

The Mouth of Sauron was excellent. Those teeth! OMG. I didn't mind the ending of that scene and I knew what would happen because I have the video game and that scene (along with a few others) are in the video game.

I was sad there was no special ending with reckoning of the Shire, but i guess you take what you can get.

I guess I'll have to wait until King Kong gets done filming so Peter Jackson can begin work on The Hobbit.

13. This was the least of the Extended Editions
The FOTR and TTT editions were sublime--the latest is a mixed bag. Some additions worked (The Voice of Saruman/the conversation between Pippin and Faramir/The Witch-King confrontation), others simply threw more portentious dialogue at the viewer, needlessly prolonging the film.

Worst of all is the conclusion to the Mouth of Sauron scene; it's morbid (more befitting of "Conan the Barbarian") and a slap to the face for those of us who were expecting a spiritual tete-a-tete. Mighty uncharacteristic of Aragorn to boot.

18. My husband went at midnight when it was released and bought it
(OK, he went to Wal-Mart, I just can't make him stop, but I haven't shopped there in a month, and I'm surviving!)

He went a couple of days later a rented a big screen TV...you pay for a week ($50), you get a month.

I agree....AWESOME!

20. it sure doesn't need extended battle scenes
I've been a fan of the books for 25+ years, and although I found some parts of the movies enjoyable, others I thought were hopelessly redundant or just plain stupid (like Faramir taking Frodo 500 miles out of their way in TTT so we could see another Nazgul and battle scene. Then Faramir has a sudden change of heart, WTF??) Jackson's overwhelming love for monsters and battle scenes gets tiresome, along with his "Hey, the ring is EVIL, get it?!" message that he whacks us over the head with at every possible opportunity, so I'm hoping that that the Extended edition doesn't add any more of the same. Glad to know that the Saruman scene is in there; at least that means a bit of dialog!
