Chinese cabbie facing fines after running red lights to deliver baby
BEIJING (AFP) - A speeding taxi driver who ran a series of red lights trying to rush a heavily pregnant woman to hospital may face fines and have his license endorsed, state media said.

Gao Haijun jumped several red lights Sunday after an anxious couple asked him to take them to the closest delivery ward, around half an hour away, the China Daily said.

"The woman was crying so loud in my car that I could hardly give a second thought but drove on," said Gao.

On arriving at the hospital, Gao noticed the woman had delivered the baby in the cab during the mad dash.

He is now trying to find the couple to prove his reasons for violating traffic laws, but they left the hospital with the baby that same day, leaving no contact details.

1. I had a similar thing happen once

Didn't get any traffic tickets on the way there, but got chewed out for leaving the taxi in front of the Emergency room door for a few minutes while I helped the mom-to-be to the desk.

Hell, her water broke when she stood up to get out of the cab. "I CONSIDERED IT TO BE AN EMERGENCY,"I told the cop in a polite, yet firm, voice (I used 'all caps' when I said it, though). I ended up avoiding the ticket in the end.

I don't suppose it helps much to plead with the judge in Chinese traffic court, though.
