What was is musically about 1971?
Think about it:

Led Zeppelin "Zoso"
John Lennon "Imagine"
George Harrison "All Things Must Pass"
Pink Floyd "Meddle"
David Bowie "The Man Who Sold the World"
Nick Drake "Bryter Later"
Black Sabbath "Master of Reality"

And there are more...just do a search on your favorite 70's era group and see what they released in 1971...

No other year put out so many Rock essentials...some kind of mass inspiration in rock that year...

3. That year all of those albums came out
All perfect masterpieces....

25. Do you remember a show
that played the week's Top 10 and showed little films to accompany the songs? A precursor to music videos. Sometimes the films featured the band or singer, and sometimes they were Hallmark card scenes.

'It's Impossible' was on that show forever, it seemed, with a soft-focus film of a couple walking around looking schmoopy.

7. James Taylor
had a big record out that year also.

And there was that great Carol King album that came out that year.

But this was also the year of American Pie. :puke:

8. Now even with American Pie...
Compare American Pie to anything on the Top 40 today - what would you rather hear?

14. I'd rather listen to contemporary Top 40, quite honestly
Unless another option is to have an ice pick driven into my ears...

16. Don't forget soul music. It was still kicking ass in '71.
Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON.

Sly & The Family Stone's THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON.

Isaac Hayes' SHAFT.

Not to mention great singles by Stevie Wonder, the Staple Singers, the Chi-Lites, the Jackson Five, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, King Floyd, Jean Knight, Betty Wright, the Persuaders, Denise LaSalle, Wilson Pickett, the Honey Cone, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Johnnie Taylor, the Temptations, and Al Green, among others.

If there was a time when soul music entered adulthood, it was in 1971.
