ARRRGGH! It's spelled "milquetoast" and NOT "milktoast!"
"Milktoast" is toasted bread soaked in milk, and NOT the term for a wimpy, spineless, cowardly jerk. "Milquetoast" is the correct term for such a person. I've finally snapped after seeing "milktoast" for, like, the five millionth time today.

Okay, there, I feel all better now! Annoying, uptight lecture from the annoying daughter of not one, but TWO, English teachers (the curse of my life, lol!) is now over. You may return to our regularly scheduled message board.

1. Nothing worse than an anal daughter of English teachers...
...are you getting ready to pull your red pen out? ;-)

2. LOL!
If you think I'm bad, think of what I had to go through while growing up! I don't think I'd wish that on my worst enemy, lol! The only good thing about it is my love for reading and literature and writing, and the fact that I sound at least reasonably educated and articulate!

8. You're just lucky. I was going to spell "pen" as "pin"...
...knowing it would be the wrong usage. Just to piss you off. :-)

And "them" for "those", and "don't" for "doesn't" and "perspective" for "prospective" and "do" for "due" (and vice versa), and......oh, I'm sorry, time to remove the red pen from my ass!!!

4. There has to have been a literary character named Milquetoast, who
was a wimp. Anyone have any ideas?

5. My understanding is that
milquetoast was originally a French term, but I'm not totally certain on that.

16. I happen to own an unabridged dictionary
It says: "after Caspar Milquetoast, a character in "The Timid Soul", comic strip by H.T. Webster 20th century American cartoonist"

HOWEVER, it also includes "milktoast" as an alternate spelling of milquetoast. So there - Kleeb was right.

9. Well, John, for your sake,
I hope you didn't write a paper with the word "milktoast" included. If you did, you better hope your teacher is a helluva lot more understanding than I am!

17. I must have a gajillion pet peeves
not unlike your "milquetoast" one. I just had not run across that one enough to make me froth at the mouth.

At my age, I just look, wince, and keep on moving. Spelling and correct diction are rapidly becoming lost arts.

May your journey be a pleasant one.
