3. The name Formica comes from "faux mica"

Mica, the mineral with the layered textures...

Clever, eh?

4. I didn't know that
I like-a mica. Can't see it used for countertops, though. A bit fragile, no?

5. close but not quite it was used "FOR MICA"
in electronic bread boards around WWII? not sure about that. It is epoxy resin over kraft paper, and an insulator.

6. Don't go with a dark shade Corian
FYI

If anyone is thinking about getting new countertops, Corian is great stuff but the darker colors show scratches VERY easily. I've got black Corian and I've had to be extra careful about scratches...they're not that easy to get out.

Just thought I'd share.:-)

8. We've got Corian with a speckled finish...
...and I'm glad, because with the mixed colors, it looks as good as the day as it was installed.

10. Melamine over cheap particle board.
I work in a shop that makes all kinds of counter tops. Formica to Corian. (We send the marble jobs out).
The shoemakers children have no shoes it would seem. But unlike the people that have wonderful kitchens for show and status.....I can actually make a great meal from almost anything edible. :toast:
