Geez Al, some things just aren't funny when you risk losing your life.
This is not a confidence building joke for our troops.
This is about as funny as the "screaming pillow that was used to murder Arafat" joke.
Maybe he could have saved this one til the troops were home safe.

8. Struck me as a bit odd, too. I was expecting to dig it, but didn't. |
|
I even knew what was coming and it grated on me. This whole damn "war" grates on me, though. Maybe the latest carnage has just taken the will to laugh, about war, completely out of me.
This war is ruining me in new and different ways, every day.

9. Hey, if the troops laughed, then I have no problem with his getup. |
|
I don't see him wearing tomatoes in the picture.

11. I'm sure the soldiers have a very dark sense of humor. |
|
Franken's been doing this a while now (entertaining the troops) so I'm sure he has an idea of how dark their humor is.
Getting up there and acting silly is probably more of an affront to them than Al's ironic and dark sense of humor.

12. I'm sure he pulled it off |
|
all he has to do is show is face and you have to laugh. He looks like David Letterman on steroids (whatever the hell that means).

15. It seems they do. I remember watching 60 MINUTES when they visited |
|
Charlie Company in Vietnam. Some new recruits came while 60 MINUTES was there and the "old timers" of Charlie Company serenaded the new comers with their own version of CAMPTOWN RACES:
You're going home in a body bag Doo dah, doo dah You're going home in a body bag All the doo day day.
Shot between the eyes! Shot between the thighs! You're going home in a body bag All the doo dah day.
I was eleven or twelve and so horrified by it that the scene is still in my head. But all the kid soldiers were laughing and seemed to think it was a great joke.
Dark humor indeed.

14. Just where do you get off with slander like this? |
|
I really think you owe Al Franken an apology.
Not only is he putting his fucking life on the line (he has been in at least two mortar attacks) but he is there to HELP the troop's morale.
I think you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

10. Yes, Al's been entertaining the troops for a while now . . . |
|
he's got a pretty good idea of their dark sense of humor, I'm sure.
