Watching "Inherit the Wind" |
|
Interesting claims of liberal media bias even when the movie was done (regarding the media of the time of the Scopes trial).
Spencer Tracy plays the Clarence Darrow character, defending the Scopes character, talking about how religion of the time is being polluted by overzealousness: "As long as the prerequisite for that shining paradise is ignorance, bigotry and hate, I say to hell with it."
Things haven't changed a bit...

1. Ooh I saw the play at Fords Theatre when I was in 8th grade |
|
Then the modern version with Jack Lemmon as Drummond(Darrow) and George C. Scott as Brady(Bryan). It was excellent, it profoundly moved me, something I saw just as I was getting in to politics, it really is a great story, Darrow is a big hero of mine, I like a lot that I knwo about William Jennings Byran too.

10. OK -- the school did its job. |
|
But you took responsibility for and enthusiasm in your learning, and that exceeds the norm.
My hat's still off.

2. Seeing the revival scene as a child... |

made me very determined never to be a Christian, although I did not realize then that what I was repelled by was fundamentalism, not Christianity.

3. Tracy is probably my all-time favorite actor. |
|
I liked him in this, Judgement at Nuremberg, and The Old Man and the Sea.

9. Great movie...the story is a fantastic mirror view of today... |
|
unfortunately...:(
Bryant was a HUGE advocate of the working man and the Family Farmer. He was not the image "Inherit" o, but he was very religious. He was from Weeping Water NE, and his home still stands...:)
I don't think he would have been a good, and certainly not a great, president; but he certainly was principled, and had a huge heart for the working poor and downtrodden...:)
