Police Handing Out $150 Fines For Swearing This Christmas

POLISH police are trying to force locals to stop swearing this Christmas by handing out $150 fines.

Officers in Elblag in northern Poland say they have already collected thousands of dollars as part of a campaign to get people to enter into the spirit of Christmas - and say the town is more "peaceful" as a result.

They say the success of the scheme has prompted authorities in other areas to adopt similar measures and added they were thinking of continuing it into next year as well.

Krzyszstof Orszagh of the Association for the Support of Victims of Crime said: "You have to battle even with smaller misdemeanours because otherwise it could seem as if you can get away with the bigger crimes."
