1. My Christmas Eve dinner had a moment

when the conversation turned to Hawaii and the host's sister's partner's 90-year-old mother, who had grown up there, said it's full of Japanese people.

Everyone just stared at her, and I considered saying, "You know, I noticed that on Oahu." Because it's true - it did notice that when I was there in 1986 - but before I finished considering, she said, "Hawaii's gone to hell!"

Then everyone looked uncomfortable and someone changed the subject.

It's good for wingnuts to hear opposing viewpoints, if you can do it without arguing. And it's totally unfrickincool to say you hate Mexican food and use that as a springboard to a racial slur. People under 90 should know better and not be allowed to get away with it.
