2. The Dentist
When I was younger, just a bad little kid,
my mama noticed funny things I did,
like shootin' puppies with a B B gun.
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done
I'd find a pussycat and bash in its head.
That's when my mama said (What did she say?),
she said, "My boy, I think someday
you'll find a way to make your natural tendencies pay.

You'll be a dentist.
You have a talent for causin' things pain.
Son, be a dentist.
People will pay you to be inhumane.

4. for comedy, The Jerk
For a heavier role, "The Spanish Prisoner". Straight a character as he has ever played, and a great Mamet film.

7. the Father of the Bride movies were painfully bad
Aping, mugging, clichιd tripe. I don't blame him so much as the crappy material he had to work with. "Hit" movie crowd-pleasing crap!

17. Pennies From Heaven.
The adaptation of the BBC version with Steve Martin allowed him to highlight his talent for drama, tap, and . . . lip-syncing. I think this film is his best.
