Merry Christmas to all our DU Republicans!

Merry Christmas to all believers, of course, but I wanted to call out the Republicans specifically because they so often bear the brunt of our hostility toward the party they call home. I am, of course, not speaking of the "freepers" (in fact or in spirit) who come here to sneer or disrupt, but those Republicans who are as appalled as we are about what a few exremists are doing in their party's name. I'm sure they disagree with many policies supported by Democrats here, too, but more important to me, today, is the fact that they disagree with the actions of the extremists running their party.

While I believe that any action that maintains or expands the power of Republicans while the extremists have a stranglehold on the party is a bad action - including voting for so-called moderate Republicans - I do not believe our DU Republicans deserve the epithets we indiscriminately hurl at members of their party. Some so-called "Republicans" really ARE "rethugs" or "repugs" or "repukes" or whatever other favorite epithet you use... but these are not those Republicans. Our Republicans are here to "reach across the aisle" and make common cause with us on this one issue - to defeat the extremists who have captured their party. Please, let's note and celebrate the difference, in recognition of the words of the man whose birth believers celebrate today:

I believe that this is the true sentiment of the vast majority of DUers. We all want to fix this mess so we can go back to being "loyal opposition" when not at the helm, believing in the good intentions (if not the specific paths) of the other.
