3. No.
I just can't bring myself to do it. The very little bits I've seen over the years are awful.
I also hate the Wizard of Oz.

Actually, my boyfriend has never seen it. I taped it for him this year, but he still hasn't watched it.

Just a tip---don't put your tongue on a frozen pole.

18. read Jean Shepherd's original book, then ...
Edited on Sat Dec-25-04 09:07 PM by Lisa
"In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash" (1966). A friend of mine, who grew up in a similar working-class neighborhood to the one Shepherd described -- and despises holiday nostalgia and any attempts to gloss over his impoverished, dysfunctional childhood -- howled with laughter over the writing.

Many of the stories were originally published in Playboy (not noted for being particularly sappy). I think it's a little like some of Stephen Leacock's sharper satires, but with more cursing. They had to make some of the irony a bit more subtle in the movie (or be accused of sacrilege, I guess) but some of it's still in there, if you look carefully.

(I like him too!)

But rent the movie so you get it uncut. It's so sarcastic and REMINDS you of what a pain in the ass being a kid can be. :D

25. Home Alone SUCKS
Gawd, it represents what is WRONG with America, especially in having no taste. "A Christmas Story" FLOPPED when it came out in 1983, but caught on with the help of cable repeats. "Home Alone" was a huge success, one of the biggest hits of the decade. It's trite, obvious, and clichéd. It sucks a big one. Embarrassing for Joe Pesci.

Compare the child actors in "Xmas Story" with the vapid and mugging Macauley Culkin, and you will see what I mean. Peter Billingsley in "Xmas Story" was a master of timing and nuance. He also is a successful director now. Culkin is a drug-addled loser, appropriately.

AND for the record that tongue to the pole thing....well, I'm just not sure. I tried it once when the temp was in the teens and nothing untoward happened.

I do know that touching cold metal is a good way to get frostbite--be it with your tongue or not--so nobody has to get really worked up about my behaviour :)

Also, listen closely to Jean Shepherd's narration, that is where a lot of the comic gold is, and also try to remember what hell childhood was! :D

37. Do it....hey it's better than most of the crap out there, but that's just
my opinion....we waste time all the time...at least this one is kinda funny relating to common human behavior when one is young...kinda crosses generations, imho...but some folks may not get the time frame. Those of us who remember some of this stuff really get off on it...:D
