Poll question: Best 80s "Arena Rock" band...
Of the sub-metal genre...

I was going to post this as a "Worst" poll but I have to admit to actually liking some of these guys.

(I know, I have awful taste in music) :)

1. Yes...
More of a 70's band, but they were still great in the 80's (even without Steve Howe)

5. More out of respect for Yes
Lest they be trashed along with the others.

10. Steve Howe was great with Asia. I saw them in '82 and they had
one album out -- about an hour of the show was each of the guys soloing -- Steve Howe and Karl Palmer were just incredible! I guess I spent most of .81-'82 going to shows. The River tour was great, the Who would have been great except for Kenny, but that show also had the Clash at Shea -- they were fantastic.

6. I worked for em all. Journey was really, really great. oddly, Van Halen
was good, but the best time was with Bon Jovi.

ACDC RAWKED and they were bad bad bad bad boys.

Ozzi's show was WILD.

The most professional was Journey, though. They were really into their craft and could always be found in hotel lounges after the show jamming, singing, playing piano with locals, etc.

7. I would have said Styx
if this was the 1970s. They pretty much came undone after the disastrous Kilroy tour.I know it's cool to hate Styx, but go back and listen to some of their older albums (anything pre-Kilroy). There are some remarkably populist/progressive messages in there. This is what sold as blue collar music in the 1970s. What a remarkable change from Styx to Toby Keith.

From "The Grand Illusion"
America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car
Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on Earth's this spell we're under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are

Note: If you don't want to dirty yourself by actually listening to the music, at least browse the lyrics. http://www.styxnet.com/styxlyrics

9. I agree
They peaked during the seventies and were pretty much over during the eighties...

Some of Tommy Shaw's post Styx solo work was pretty good tho...

8. I was never a big Journey fan, but boy, did they put on a great show.
I saw them in 1982. The WORST was Foreigner and the stupid inflatable jukebox. But, boy do I have a lot of respect for Journey. As an aside, AC/DC should be on this list -- I never saw them personally, but as I understand, they put on a great show. It was a great time for concerts. J. Geils, The Kinks, Tom Petty, all at the time put on great shows.

11. I really wasn't in to any of these guys in the 80's
I saw Van Halen many a time and they were awesome live. They were sloppy with Dave and much more tight with Sammy (effin rethuglican pawn) Hagar. AC/DC was just incredible as was Motely Crue believe it or not. I also enjoyed Great White, Def Leppard, Rush, Ozzy, Deep Purple, Scorpions, etc...

12. Aren't Styx, Foreigner, and Boston more 70's bands than 80's?

13. True...
The title was more of a copycat title for a 80s hair-metal poll that's been going around.

14. How about Rush?
I went to see them when I was about 10 (in 1984-ish) and it was fucking awesome. I can't believe my big sister talked my folks into taking us. I think it was was the first time I got stoned (contact buzz) and it changed my life. I don't really know what qualifies as 'arena rock', but it was definitely rock, and the show was at an arena.
