Bill Hicks Fans: DVD now available in US
I've been searching for a DVD of a Hicks performance (any performance) for years...until this weekend, I have only been able to find European copies that are, unfortunately, incompatible with US DVD players. (Hicks has a much larger following in England than in his home country).

I got a Borders gift certificate for Christmas and out of curiosity I looked up Hicks at www.borders.com. This is what I found (and promptly ordered):

Bill Hicks Live - Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian

BILL HICKS - ON DVD AT LAST!
Bill Hicks Live is the first official DVD release from the legendary and beloved comedian.

Since Bill died in 1993, his work has reached a new audience and he has become a powerful cult figure. For these fans who never had the opportunity to see Bill in person, this DVD will be a revelation. The DVD captures Bill at his very best, with three of his legendary filmed performances:

"One Night Stand" from the Old Vic Theatre in Chicago (approx 30 minutes)

"Revelations" from the Dominion Theatre in London (approx 65 minutes)

"Relentless", Bill’s breakout performance at the Montreal Comedy Festival (approx 70 minutes)

The DVD focuses on his incredible live act, with Hicks hilariously assaulting the stage and the audience with a non-stop cornucopia of insights into our twisted world; the government, the military, the police, religion, smoking, pornography, drugs and of course, for those of you who are getting antsy, a couple of dick jokes.

As a bonus, the documentary "Just A Ride" surveys Bill’s remarkable career with insights from his peers; including Brett Butler, Eddie Izzard, Richard Jeni, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Thea Vidale. (approx 45 minutes)

Total running time: approx 3.5 hours of pure, unadulterated Hicks

This has apparently been available since October, but it fell below my radar somehow. I just thought I'd share this with other Hicks fans who might not be aware of it.

4. Yeah, my jaw nearly dropped down to my lap when I found this
I've been searching since the mid-90s for a visual recording of one of his performances (particularly Revelations).

The CDs are good, but watching him perform adds so much more to the experience.

7. I had a bootleg copy of "Revelations" some time ago...
...I lost it at one of my friend's houses. It is a great performance and I'm psyched to watch it again.

8. You can find visual stuff of Bill Hicks all over the net on p2p apps
The majority of p2p apps like kazaalite, eMule, Soulseek all have video of Bill HIcks available to download for free.

Since (very very unfortunately, as I love Bill Hicks)Bill is no longer among the living, I say go ahead and pirate the shit out of the material....

2. I love Bill Hicks and Eddy Izzard
I hate Richard Jeni...he steals material off of young comedians doing open mike nights.

5. Yeah, they also have Letterman and Leno on the documentary
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 11:53 AM by deutsey
Letterman's show screwed Hicks big time by censoring him and Hicks saw Leno as a fallen hero. So it's a bit ironic that they're in the documentary.

If you've ever heard Hicks' lacerating critique of Leno hosting the Tonight Show or doing those Doritos commercials he used to do, you'll know what I mean about seeing Leno talking about him.

13. I was forced into going to see Leno
Before he hosted the tonight show. I have a friend who was in love with him and she bought tickets to see him three nights in a row :puke:

He did the same exact routine every night including picking out someone in the audience to ask the same exact question and the person was the same person all three nights.

The third night that I watched Leno I fell asleep at a table right in front of the stage and any other comedian would have torn me apart but Leno stuck to his routine.

My friend Sue never mentioned Leno again after the last night that we went to see him.

3. Wow, thanks
I'll be getting that one for sure. If Bill Hicks were alive, he'd probably have the best comedic commentary on our current cluster fuck.

Check out this link to sacredcow.com that includes lots of Bill Hicks video clips. I spent all night last week looking at all of these. Ohmygod, the "Sane Man on Drugs" clips had me on the floor. Enjoy them all.

14. The Trio TV special on Bill Hicks is being shown on January 9th.
You can get Trio on satellite, or on most cable digital networks. This is called "Outlaw Comic: The Censoring of Bill Hicks" hosted by Janeane Garofalo and it's 90 minutes. If you haven't seen this before, prepare to tape it because it's a keeper. It's on the Trio schedule as follows:

January 9 at 6:00 pm EST
February 10 at 9:00 pm EST and Midnight EST
February 12 at 7:30 pm EST

Interesting to me that over 10 years after his death, Hicks is becoming the hottest comic/social commentator in the country.

18. I remember the first time I heard Bill Hicks.
It was one of those Bang-Kapow moments, like when I first heard the Beatles or John Prine. I knew this was someone very, very different and very, very good.

Oh, for someone like him today!
