She went there to visit family... I hope she is OK.

7. Actually, the main impact was in the Indian Ocean.

most tsunamis occur in the Pacific.
Japan has an extensive warning system.
In fact, there is supposed to be a warning system in place for the Indian Oceanbut most of the affected countries are too poor to take part.

8. Right, meant western Pacific/Indian Ocean. And expense is
the main reason. The warning network mostly follows the "ring of fire" from South America through Japan.

2. Have you found any news sites that are naming the US fatalities?
My dads in Thailand right now and I keep hearing americans died but they don't name them. Have you seen any sites where they name them?

4. Someone mentioned Living Planet having an area. Not sure
whether it's an area to facilitate communications or list casualties thought.

I can't imagine they'd have the means to get that info out right now. Anyway, I'm sure they're not posting it out of consideration to the family -- not the best way to be informed your loved one is dead.
