How many here like music artists of the opposite sex more?
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 09:18 PM by mvd
For their music I mean. For pre-90s stuff, I don't have a preference. In fact, the Beatles are my favorite artist. But it seems lately that I enjoy female artists more than male ones in general, and I'm a male. Only 6 out of my 20 favorite albums of 2004 are by males.

1. I thought I was a weirdo! Own one album by a woman.

(That album is Tori Amos' Under the Pink) There are about 3/4 albums I borrow from friends when I'm in a girly mood, but I think it's because I really dig unique love influenced songs and coming from girls I think it's just so old.

We all know girls are the lovey dovier/more emotionally expressive of the two sexes, and it's just more moving to me to hear Jeff Buckley singing about love than...I don't know....some girl.

I do dig a few female acts very much, I had bought Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Toward Ectasy and then lost it. Had Tori's Little Earthquakes, my sis swiped it...and there's that. Generally I am very picky about which music I actually buy, though. I have about 20 cds total.

OH--but I do like 50/60's women/girl groups. The Supremes kick all ass.

3. A good deal of the stuff I listen to is by male artists
I use the term "artist" for a reason, too. For some reason, it seems a good deal of the female singers are in the Brittney Spears/Destiny's Child ilk(and Usher for the males), and the music is not a focus. The focus seems to be more on vocal acrobatics, with no substance. I call it cheesy poof music. I do listen to artists like Sheryl Crow, Sarah Mclachlan, Annie Lennox...etc. I seem to like musical acts better when they can play a musical instrument.

I do think Usher and Destiny's Child have substance (Destiny's Child's new album isn't good, though.) And I kind of like Britney's In The Zone. There are a lot of female pop artists I enjoy, and that's one reason I buy albums from female artists more.

11. "Imagine" by John Lennon =substance,
"Yeah" by Usher, and "Survivor" by Destiny's Child =no substance. How many times can you say "Yeah" or "I'm a survivor, ain't never gonna give up, I'm a survivor, keep on survivin'" before any semblence of substance starts to seep away. Perhaps to some the music is infectious and enjoyable, that doesn't give it substance.

But, you know what they say about opinions. :)

12. I'm saying that some of their songs do have substance

"Survivor" is well written BTW. Can't agree enough about the opinions part. :-)

13. We will have to agree to disagree
on the "Survivor" being well written part. It seems a trite, sad rip off of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". "Believe" by Cher and "Fighter" by Christina Aguilera were better written, not that Cher or Christina acutally wrote them, I am not sure of that.

Don't get me wrong, I listen to some music that lacks substance lyrically. I like some Limp Bizkit. I like the aggresiveness in the actual music in their case.

14. We'll have to disagree because I find it a MORE
affecting song than "I Will Survive."

5. The genre of music I listen to is male dominated...
Rock, Alternative Rock, etc. which doesn't bother me at all. I also enjoy the female artists' music in the same genre, there's just not as much.

8. I know what you're talking about
I find myself "craving" female vocals quite a bit lately. I'm not sure why.

My favorite stuff is mostly girl garage punk or indie-pop/alt country

Anywhere from Kim Shattuck (of the Muffs) to Neko Case...

9. I do. Most of the stuff I like is by male artists.
I like hard rock, and it's mostly men who play it. I also like male vocals better than female. I don't know why, I just do. I tend to have problems with high pitched sounds in general.

15. I don't like most chick singers
except for Stevie Nicks, who can do no wrong except for Too Far from Texas with Whatserface from the Dixie Chicks. I have just about everything Stevie has ever done. And Heart, pre- and post-hair band phase. Oh, and Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde and the 4 Non Blondes.

Sheryl Crow can rock, too, but she keeps doing these bubble-gum sounding pop songs and is on my should-quit list along with Madonna. I also like Beauty Gwen, but just because she's cool and not a great singer or anything.

Gag me with Sarah McLachlan and Dido and the rest of them who get all the radio play lately.

Another reason why I like female singers. BTW, I hear nothing bubblegum in Sheryl's stuff. It's rock.

Stevie Nicks is great - we agree on something.

But since I found SomaFM I bought some Sleater-Kinney and Metric. I like it. Now watch me make this freezer pizza.
