Please explain Jewel. Also, what singer or group do you not understand why
they are so successful? I have never understood why Jewel was such a big success. I listened to some of her stuff but it made me feel I was in an elevator. And when she sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl in 1998, it was obviously lip-synched, as the voice started before she opened her mouth. I just don't get her and why she was such a huge success.
The second question is what singer or group do you not understand why they are such a big success.

27. Jessica Simpson just mangled "O Holy Night" on "The View." Celine Dion did
a passionate recording of it that was played a lot on the radio last week - what an unfortunate choice Simpson made, it really shows the stark difference in style and talent between the two women.

Will sell at least a million just because she's rich and recycled.
Wish I could find the pic of her before she got the plastic surgery, blonde hair dye, and blue contacts.

Oh here it is:

She played Tia on "Escape to Witch Mountain." So I have a soft spot for Paris.

Not much of one, though.

7. I guess Jewel's poetry is supposed to be DEEP
I haven't heard anything about her for a few years though. Is she still making CDs? Maybe she's reduced to just making a Christmas CD each year (William Hung is doing that too - yea, that American Idol guy.)

10. I love Jewel, passionately. I never got James Taylor or Steely Dan
One of my favorite songwriters. She had a Jacques Brel sound, and her lyrics were poignant and fresh when they were released. She has a good voice, and in her first two albums sung with a playful tease to her voice. Sean Penn called her the Bob Dylan of her generation after her first album, and though obviously she never lived up to that, the songs on her first album, especially, were well written.

James Taylor is like Woody Allen or Neil Simon to me-- every word sung is about himself, and I'm supposed to care about how beautiful he is. I swear Carly wrote "You're so vain" about him. Even if she didn't, it fits. Plus his voice was awful, and his melody lines little better than average speech.

Steely Dan-- I don't know, I can kind of hear why people like them, I just hate the lead vocals, and find the music flat and uninspired. They had cool rythms, though, and their finished product at least sounded like they worked on it and meant for it to sound that way-- unlike, say, James Taylor, or Poison.

Dylan's the guy I never understood. If you're going to be too lazy to even try to enunciate, I'm going to be too lazy to buy your record.

16. Jewel's first album "Pieces of You" was quite good.
She had a unique sound at the time and it was pretty decent music.

Her more recent stuff isn't as good, but she is certainly better than some like Jessica Simpson, etc.

17. This is why I detest Jewel:
A couple of years ago, Time (or maybe it was Newsweek)ran a cover story about the Lilith Fair titled "Jewel & the Gang," and obvious pun on "Kool and the Gang." Apparently Jewel took umbrage to the "gang" connotation, blasting the magazine for for being unfair to her and the rest of the Lilith performers. She was completely clueless. Oh, and the "pop" album she did a couple years ago showed how little integrity she had in the first place.

20. Nirvana
I never understood why they were so big. Always sounded like a bad garage band with a singer that was so drunk he couldn't speak. I know they were supposed to be the new wave of anti-establishment, but there were good bands that were also anti-establishment (Queensryche comes to mind).

29. Thank God I'm not the only one!
I have friends who love Dave Matthews Band and I can't stand them, mainly because there was a year-long span where it seemed as if every third song on the radio was one of theirs.

As for jam bands like Phish, well, to me it sounds like overlong pointless guitar wankery. Just MHO.

24. The Grateful Dead
I never got it. The music was always second-rate folk-rock. their "experimentalism" consisted of some wanky 45-minute guitar solo over some tired twelve-bar blooze chord pattern. The vocals were like fingernails on the chalkboard. Their "far out" music was actually very conservative for the time when you consider the other stuff that was emerging at the same time (The Velvet Underground, The Fugs, Hendrix, even Jefferson Airplane).

I never got the Dead, and I never got Deadheads either. Of course I was never a big weed enthusiast, either.

33. Well, I find her to have a nice voice
It's fragile and unique. She does compact folk/pop that has an accessible sound. Personally I like her, yet this time I agree about a pop album not being so good: I don't think she's a fit for a dancy sound. Though the song she originally meant for Kylie Minogue would have been good in her hands.

I never got the appeal of Bjork. It just sounds like art that went awry. I'll never understand her just like I'll never understand the people who don't like James Taylor or Nirvana.
