should sporting events be cancelled this weekend?
afterall, they were all cancelled the weekend after September 11th when 3,000 were killed. I'm not trying to make light of this, but isn't there a double standard? being that well over 35,000 were killed on sunday?

4. That has nothing to do with it.
I hope you're kidding, BTW.
Now, if a tsunami hit a portion of the United States, then obviously the answer would be yes.

2. events were cancelled because there was a percieved terrorism risk

not because of the number of people killed.

i don't think theres any risk of a tsunami hitting any stadiums this weekend.

5. true, but...
weren't alot of people talking about how it just didn't feel right playing sports (games) after such a horrible tragedy? Sure the causes are different, but still...

8. they may have been talking about it
but the reason the games were cancelled was security.

3. not quite the same
There were security issues to be considered with large gatherings of U.S. citizens at sporting events. The superbowl was held a week late in New Orleans that year, and we had fighter jets overhead.

6. Not all Sports Events were cancelled, only American based events.
Several Car races went on that weekend and football (our soccer) in South America was not cancelled. The Brits suspended premier games, but some minor English leagues played.

I think America cancelled games both because of security concerns, and because of the difficult emotional issues involved in being attacked.

While the tragedy facing much of the Indian Ocean based world is well beyond the death and injury toll infleicted upon the US during the 9/11, the same feelings are not present.

My two cents.

7. That was in a different country. (The 35K, that is.)
I'm sure sporting events are cancelled THERE.
