Can you change majors in College in the middle of your school year?
I am afraid to call my counselor up at my new College because she is from my old College that I received my Associates Degree at and she is heavily associated with the field that I am earning my degree in.

I was thinking about changing my major to Marketing and using my skills that I have my Associates Degree in as a base for the area of marketing that I will go into.

When I was registering for my classes that start up in January I felt something was wrong and I kind of asked her about other areas that someone like myself could go into. She started pushing the industry that I have my Associates in and she kept talking about me being a TA at the other College and how I won a scholarship, etc. I also had a high GPA at my other College and I am screwing up at the new one and I am not sure if it was from the Selection of * or because deep down I know that I have to change majors and go into another field.

How does it effect your loans if you change Majors?

1. shouldn't affect it at all
unless your scholarship was for your major, or changing majors will force you to take an extra year.

2. Doesn't affect your loans at all. Changed mine twice. Yes you can change.
And trust me, your counselor won't care as much as you think she will.

It's your life, not hers. If that's what you want to do, go for it.

Any way you can talk to a new counselor (if you want?)?

3. It depends upon the college but in general the answer is "yes".
Please check on the additional courses that might be required if you change majors. Additional courses would be offset by going into a field that you love.

4. Okay, I swear I'm not trying to be rude, but...
do you think maybe you should talk to someone, like a therapist? You seem to be afraid of a lot of things--afraid to see a doctor, afraid to tell them your real name in the ER, afraid to change your major. You must know that these are things that people do everyday, that most people aren't afraid of. Do you think maybe you have a paranoia disorder? No judgement from me, I see a therapist myself, so no stigma attached there.

13. I have a phobia or to put it bluntly a hatred for "some" Doctors
It goes back to my Mom never coming out of the hospital.

The name in the ER. I applied for a job at Quaker Oats a few months back and they pulled out up my medical background and started asking me about a back surgery that I had when I was a teenager.

I am seeing a counselor at my College. Since the selection they have hired several more counselors.

17. Unless the company has a death wish, I doubt that very much.
And aside from the legal issues of their allegedly having those records, I doubt there's any way they could even get the records. Sounds most unlikely.

They are entitled to those records and it's court documents.

21. Not at the first Interview
They do a background check financially, medical and criminal. They don't do it at the beginning they conduct it when they decide to hire you right before you start your job.

It happens and the media isn't going to do a story on it. It's legal and they are getting away with it.

The next time that you apply for a job read the very fine print that people overlook before signing.

23. If you overlooked the fine print, and signed a document saying
they could look at your medical records, then there's nothing really nefarious going on here, is there? Besides, it couldn't possibly have been "fine print". With HIPAA regulations, you are required to sign a very specific form which states very clearly that you give so-and-so permission to access your medical records. I work in medical administration, I know the law about this issue.

26. This happens to overlap with my line of work.
Medical record searches are NOT part of an employment background check. It's NOT legal, and it's NOT being done. These are the things that can be checked: criminal history, credit report, employment history (which can also check for litigation and/or complaints under EEOC or state employment regulations).

28. Well, now...
If it was a worker's comp issue that would affect her ability to perform the job for which she was applying, they may have had legal rights to those records. However, as I stated above, she would have signed a very specific and obvious document saying that she gave permission for them to access her medical records. It wouldn't have been a tiny line at the bottom of a page.

30. Yup.
Back surgery as a teenager doesn't strike me as something that was likely a workers' comp issue, but you never know. And you're right about it involving a separate, specific document. I'm guessing (because I've done a lot of employment work for hospitals) that you have prospective employees consent to a check on those specific records, and also submit to a pre-employment health questionnaire and/or physical.

As you well know, it's a VERY touchy legal area (fascinating area, too), and I doubt a company as large as Quaker Oats would make the kind of blunder the poster suggested.

46. Some teenagers have to go to work right out of High School
Some of the girls have babies to support and others might have a sick parent that needs financial help.

Either way it is very arrogant and ridiculous to say that teenagers shouldn't be entitled to Workman's compensation.

37. Well, that makes sense, then, doesn't it?
If you were applying for a job at Quaker Oats for which you would be doing any sort of lifting, and you had a prior workplace injury, of course they would want access to those records to determine if you were able to perform the job for which they were hiring you, right? And you did sign a document saying they could look at your medical records, didn't you? So then...I don't see how this translates to random paranoia about giving your real name in the ER?

I'm sorry, your story is very confusing to me.

39. Do you honestly think that you can get insurance once it's on your record?
I was also thinking about when my insurance runs out and they do check your background on everything.

It also might have had something to do with the test kitchen and working around food. When it comes down to it checking your medical background makes sense when you are working around food in a test kitchen.

40. Of course.
Most people have prior medical conditions of one variety or another. First of all, back surgery is not a condition that would prevent you from getting a job in marketing. Secondly, they are not allowed to discriminate/not hire you on the basis of a physical infirmity. I think you're fine.

My Mother was a diabetic and no one would provide her with life insurance unless she paid more than what the policy was worth.

Do you honestly know the difference in the cost of a policy with pre-existing conditions when it comes to rates of insurance policies?

And spare me the "it's my passion" bit. They'll suck it out of you and laugh behind your back about doing it.

Why marketing? I'm just curious.

32. Marketing is offered at my College
I am trying to figure out a way that I can stay in the same College and change my major or use both avenues to make a living in the future.

My Economics Professor didn't give me a final test because he said that I knew everything about economics and he also complimented me on wanting to become a teacher because of the pay and stress.

I have DU to thank for my education in economics over the last few years. We had a project due on outsourcing and I received and A on my paper and it was from what I had talked about on here.

I had another paper that I had to write on the Insurance Industry and I have been taken through the wringer over the past 10 years because of fighting with an Insurance Company and I received an A on that paper.

I love to help out at College and I have had younger students come up to me and ask me if i could help them with the class that we were taking.

Discrimination comes in many different forms. I feel that I am going to have a problem with being able to do the physical part of the job and I will be let go immediately.

by having an open book? I thought it was interesting that the professor just looked on while everyone blatantly cheated. Which class was that again?

And that's really cool that the professor decided you knew everything and that you didn't even need to be tested. How did the other students feel about that?

You must go to a very interesting school.

That's not the same class as Economics. I got a B in the class so the curve must have been for the students that actually took the test without their books or notes.

I attend an Art College and I guess you would say that it is interesting because we have all kinds of different people attending it. Freepers who claim to be Democrats which is about the most interesting group of people on campus. They are a small group but you can tell that they are freepers by their mentality and all of the hate that they have built up inside of them. They are probably the oddest bunch that we have at our College. They even set a table up and hand ice cream out and act like they are so caring :scared:

Anyone can look at what is posted and see that some people have major issues in their life so they take it out on others. I feel so sorry for someone that has so much hate inside of themselves that they can't move on with their life.

Can you imagine someone new looking at posts that are suppose to be made by democratic individuals and you see the same 5 or 6 people that are filled with hate every time saying the same things. Shsshh...Talk about psych problems all they have to do is look at the comments and they would feel sorry for them because it's the same thing over and over again and that means something is wrong with them.

61. I am using it
Please I am not offended that you would use the ignore button that is what it is for. Do you honestly think that I care about someone that prejudges someone else using the ignore button.

What is that old Stevie Winwood song...Come down off your cloud. Your one person on the Internet. I don't know you or your friends and it doesn't hurt me when all of you show your true colors. Please find a hobby instead of hating.

I try to make the Democratic party a better place for people and I welcome people at College into the party. I don't hold hate toward anyone and it must hurt inside to hate someone as much as you and your friends hate. To hold it in for years has to be very painful and speaking to someone might help work the problems out. Possibly group therapy might work out

Peace  Ignore!

Come on now...who has the psych problems?

How many people have posted in the past about changing majors? Why is it such a big deal with the same "group"?

Someone that takes pride in getting that jab in or that last kick in has psych problems.

Have you been here and been banned? And you know what? It's all self-inflicted. You should give that serious contemplation.

You really, really abuse the compassion and good will of your fellow DUers, and some folks have very understandably gotten tired of it. So don't act so surprised or so outraged that people starting calling you on the BS.

69. At the risk of being misunderstood, can I ask something?
Why do you ask these questions, but then when people try to help by getting more information, you get angry with them?

It might be a good idea to put the "group" you refer to on ignore. But when it comes to other posters, it seems like you ignore good advice, or are unresponsive when people ask genuine questions, people who seem to care.

I can see from your posts that you seem to be genuinely trying to do something good for yourself, while struggling with a difficult home life. I guess that makes it hard to trust people. But I have to agree with another poster that it is those people in your real life who are there to help you- school counselors, doctors, etc., who you need to go to for real help. Boards like this seem to be a better place to commiserate than to get real advice or help.

75. Let me get this right
You can't lash out at someone that is calling you a liar when you are not a liar. You can't say anything back to someone that is wrong about testing and background checks on jobs in test kitchens?

You can't ask a person to provide a link to a website about insurance policies that insure people with pre-exsisting ailments.

You can't say anything back to someone that passes judgement on you because you might want opionions on changing your major but they want to get that jab in their instead of putting someone on ignore.

What is the ignore button for? Instead of wanting to say something nasty then why can't they just put someone one ingore? Look at the message thread. Do you honestly think that the jabs weren't being thrown?

Those are some interesting reading. Nice paranoid babbling. I highly recommend it.

But I'm one of the infamous Chicago DUers who apparently have gatherings for the sole purpose of talking about Lady Democrat/corarose/ad infinitum. You know, that evil group of Chicago DUers who apparently band together to throw parties for the people they are about to get banned. The ones that stalk her everywhere she goes.

89. I'm sure your kid wouldn't be allowed to attend an inner city school
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 09:36 PM by GingerSnaps
Teachers have to be well versed in more than one area. Most parents wouldn't want their kids around the children that I am going to teach. Passing judgment on someone is fine but I don't think that you need to worry about your child because it wouldn't be attending a school that kids like the ones that I will be teaching attend. The social economic background alone wouldn't be good enough. Most of them don't own a TV or a computer and some are lucky if they have a roof over their heads. You wouldn't want that kind of element mixing with one of your own. Like you said it's like a train-wreck.

A good Teacher doesn't pass judjement on others so some people wouldn't make a very good teacher. Also, if you are not a psychiatrists then you shouldn't be making harse statements.

Did you know that anything that you post on the internet someone can keep a hard copy of? I didn't realize that until a Lawyer pointed that out one day in reference to a deflamation of character lawsuit.

Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 12:16 AM by GingerSnaps
What you said about me doesn't hurt me in any way. Your kids are your kids and you have the right to put them in any kind of school that you want.

I owned a house in a upper class suburb that most people couldn't afford to live in several years ago and we had a group of parents that made sure that anyone that was out of the closet didn't work for the school system in that area. They passed judgment on people that they didn't know also. I find that beyond disgusting!

I can't recall reading any messages that you have left until today. The world is made up of all kinds of people and I live in a large city. If I worried about everyone that I pass every day in life I would be a gray haired old woman by now getting ready to be put into a grave.

I have also worked in the music business where animosity and jealousy ran high. You learn to ignore people that don't like you for one reason or another. After this message you are on my ignore list but to tell you the truth this was the first time that I have ever read a message by you.

Also, it wasn't a warning about the Internet it was a suggestion because if you say things about someone else they might feel compelled to take action against you. Websites are not responsible for what people post but the individual that is spreading lies and making statements that is part of a defamation of character act is. It's not a warning it's a suggestion.

Do a google search about the subject. You will find a whole group of lawyers taking on cases like the one that I told you about.

Good luck in your life and don't pass judgment on people unless you know them.

AND (and this is a big "and") AAAAANNND, Carlos, often posted political threads that would generate flamewars, but he was educated about this shit. Coraro- whoops, I mean GINGER SNAPS, hasn't posted anything to my knowledge that could be considered politically controversial, just "I need love and help and advice and attention because alien Nazis stole my college transcripts"- type shit.
